FedIGS Election, Chungsik Yoo

Professor Chungsik Yoo, who is finishing out his four years of service as President of the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS), will soon shift into another high-profile geotechnical post: President of the Federation of International Geo-engineering Societies (FedIGS) for the 2022 – 2026 term. Prof. Yoo’s election to the position was announced by the IGS on July 19.

In September 2022, during EuroGeo 7, the IGS will convene an extraordinary general assembly, at which numerous IGS Councilmembers will complete their service and others will start the new term. Sam Allen, a former ASTM International Committee D35 lead and the current chair of the IGS Communications Committee, will step into the IGS presidency at the September session.

Prof. Yoo will continue in his work with the IGS as Immediate Past President while simultaneously taking the reins on FedIGS.

FEDIGS MEMBER SOCIETIES

FedIGS is a collaborative entity which connects leading geotechnical bodies:

  • ISSMGE: International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering
  • ISRM: International Society for Rock Mechanics
  • IAEG: International Association for Engineering Geology and the Environment
  • IGS: International Geosynthetics Society

In the IGS announcement, Prof. Yoo notes that climate change is one of the most pressing reasons for strengthening bonds between geo-engineering groups.

“The role of the FedIGS, as a collaborative forum for geo-engineering professionals, is never more crucial in finding solutions to these technical and societal challenges,” he says. “My priorities will include strengthening interaction between member societies through joint technical activities, and proactively engaging in geo-engineering-related global issues by communicating with the general public through various digital communication platforms.”
