Workshop Report

The Indian Chapter of IGS is promoting the applications of the geosynthetics as important and relevant to India’s need for infrastructure development, for the last more than two decades. Beginning with the first workshop in the year 1985, numerous activities to disseminate the information regarding use of geosynthetics in civil engineering, are being organised by the Indian Chapter in various parts of India.

As part of its activities, the Indian Chapter in association with the Central Board of Irrigation & Power (CBIP), organised a Workshop on “Applications of Geosynthetics – Present and Future” during 20-21 September 2007 at Ahmedabad (Gujarat).

85 participants from all over India, and Malaysia participated in the workshop. The workshop was supported by Garware-Wall Ropes Limited, Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd., Skaps Industries India Pvt. Ltd., TenCate Geosynthetics Asia Sdn Bhd, Charankattu Coir Mfg. Co. (P) Ltd., Coir Board, Maccaferri Environmental Solutions Pvt. Ltd. and Techfab India.

20 papers were presented and discussed during the workshop on the following topics:

• Applications of Geosynthetics in Water Resources Projects
• Testing of Geosynthetics
• Applications of Geosynthetics in Pavements
• Applications of Natural Fibres (Jute, Coir and allied Fibres)
• Applications of Geosynthetics in Landfills
