Geotextiles & Geomembranes JournalGeotextiles and Geomembranes is an Official Journal of the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS). IGS members receive free access to papers published in the journal since 1995. It is one of the highest impact journals in geotechnical engineering and one of two primary archival outlets for papers published on geosynthetics. It enjoys an excellent flow of high quality papers.

Following the Editorial Board meeting held in Yokohama in September 2006 (8th International Conference on Geosynthetics – 8ICG) it was decided that it would be desirable to recognise some of the best papers published in Geotextiles and Geomembranes. We started with Volume 23 and the winners for 2005 and 2006 were celebrated at the GeoAmericas 2008 Conference in Cancun in March 2008.

The Editorial Board was then charged with selecting what they considered to be the “Best Paper” published in Geotextiles and Geomembranes in Volume 25, 2007. Papers were considered for their contribution to the discipline in terms of providing significant new insights and/or of being of high potential impact on the discipline. All Technical Articles except those co-authored by the Editor were eligible. The winners were selected based solely on a vote of the Editorial Board members.

Following a rigorous review of the papers I am pleased to announce that the Best Paper for 2007 was:

• "Effect of deformations on the hydraulic stability of coastal structures made of geotextile sand
containers
" by Juan Recio and Hocine Oumeraci, Geotextiles and Geomembranes, 25 (4-5): 278-292.

Three papers were selected for Honourable Mention:

• "Tension in geomembranes on landfill slopes under static and earthquake loading—Centrifuge
study
" by N.I. Thusyanthan, S.P.G. Madabhushi and S. Singh, Geotextiles and Geomembranes, 25(2): 78-95.

• "Geosynthetic reinforcement for the reduction of the effects of explosions of internally pressurised buried pipes" by N. Tupa and E.M. Palmeira, Geotextiles and Geomembranes, 25(2): 109-127.

• "Remedial treatment of soil structures using geosynthetic-reinforcing technology" by F. Tatsuoka, M. Tateyama, Y. Mohri and K. Matsushima, Geotextiles and Geomembranes, 25(4-5): 204-220.

As runners-up and hence being judged to be amongst the four best papers published in Geotextiles and Geomembranes in 2007. Congratulations to all of the authors for their very significant contribution to the geosynthetics discipline.
