John Douglas, CoffeyCoffey Managing Director John Douglas has been listed amongst the most influential engineers in Engineers Australia’s annual Top 100 publication. Mr Douglas was recognised in the Consulting category, alongside the Managing Directors from SKM, Worley Parsons, Parson’s Brinkerhoff and Arup Australia.

The main criteria for assessment was influence. Other factors were calculated risk taking, a capacity to anticipate problems and sheer passion for what they do. The list was compiled with the assistance of eminent retired engineers from a range of candidates nominated by readers of Engineers Australia magazine.

When asked about the personal characteristics of an engineer that make them influential, he responded “Being influential means working through people and it means taking a large number of people on a journey with you. This requires real communication skills; understanding and sharing the challenges in front of the organisation,” Mr Douglas said.

Since March 2011, Mr Douglas has been leading Coffey through significant organisational changes, where strong communication skills are an important factor in the company’s success.

Mr Douglas is a civil engineer with more than 25 years’ experience in engineering, consulting and senior management roles. He holds a Bachelor of Civil Engineering with First Class Honours from the University of Adelaide and an MBA from London Business School.
