During the recent ASTM International Committee Week meetings in Indianapolis (12-14 June 2013), George Koerner, Ph.D., P.E., CQA of the Geosynthetic Institute (GSI) was honored with the “Award of Merit” and the title of “Fellow” by ASTM International. In a June 13 ceremony, Dr. Mary C. McKiel of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), who serves as ASTM International Chairman of the Board, recognized Dr. Koerner for his many years of service to ASTM committees such as Committee D35 on Geosynthetics.
The Award of Merit was established in 1949 by the ASTM International’s Board of Directors. It is the society’s highest, individual member award and is granted “for distinguished service and outstanding participation in ASTM International committee activities.”
Koerner joins a list of proud and notable D35-related recipients of the Award of Merit. The list includes:

The next ASTM Committee Week will be in January 2014. NOTE: When Committee D35 on Geosynthetics gathers at the Hyatt Regency Houston in Houston, Texas 29-31 January 2014, the committee will celebrate its 30th anniversary. The hard work of its members over the years has had a substantial and beneficial impact on engineering and construction. Geosynthetics have had a tremendous global impact, improving sustainability, extending infrastructure lives, and bettering engineered structure economics. These advances have been supported and enhanced by the dependability of the standardization community.
