In the opening column to the International Geosynthetics Society‘s IGS News (Volume 29, Issue 2), IGS President Jorge Zornberg notes, “The conferences of the IGS have played a remarkable role in the development of geosynthetic products and their applications.” Dr. Zornberg subsequently takes the reader through a brief history of the IGS conferences, with a particular emphasis on the quadrennial International Conference on Geosynthetics (ICG) as a way to introduce the forthcoming 10 ICG (Berlin, 21-25 September 2014).
This is a common refrain in IGS events and the work of its 2000+ individual members and 300+ corporate members: understanding how the history of geosynthetics—applications, research, event participation—plays an enormous role in the discipline’s future.

The rest of the issue underscores this idea with contributions from Russell Jones on IGS Chapter activity and K. Rajagopal on the online paper library available freely to IGS members; multiple past and future event updates; international “Educate the Educators” programs; and much more.
The online paper library, it should be noted, is a significant achievement, as many more events that have been held under the auspices of the IGS are now granting permission to the society to post the old papers in the IGS’s secure-access online library.
