The Indian Chapter of the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS) has published the second issue of 2013 of its Indian Journal of Geosynthetics and Ground Improvement (IJGGI). Volume 2, Issue 2 contains a number of technical articles that highlight the engineering and research interests influencing the practice in India:
- “Studies on Effects of Pre-stressing the Reinforcement on the Behaviour of Reinforced Granular Beds Overlying Weak Soil” by R. Shivashankar and J. Jayamohan
- “Consolidation of Lightly OC Clays with PVDs as a Phase Change Process” by P. Ayub Khan, M. R. Madhav and E. Saibaba Reddy
- “Improvement of Characteristics of Sand Mixing with Natural Coir Fiber” by Joyanta Maity, Bikash Chandra Chattopadhyay and Siba Priyo Mukherjee
Additional journal content focuses on available technical resources (such as the conference proceedings library via IGS’s members-only website section) and reports from gatherings in India, such as the June 2013 infrastructure seminar in Bhopal.
This issue comes during an important year for IGS India. The chapter recently celebrated its 25th anniversary with a special, multi-day Silver Jubilee conference. The companies and engineers at work within IGS India have been strong supporters of educational initiatives, regulatory revisions, and greater incorporation of stronger, more sustainable engineering solutions in infrastructure.
As one of the fastest developing economies in the world, India is challenged by enormous infrastructure needs and pressure to accomplish great development quickly. The engineers of IGS India are doing admirable work putting safety and sustainability forward in these development discussions as they offer alternatives and insight drawn from around the world; and, in turn, sharing the domestic Indian experience with the world through publications like the Indian Journal of Geosynthetics and Ground Improvement.
As a testament to activity of IGS India, the chapter received an Activity Index score of 31.9 by the International Geosynthetics Society. In an article published by Russell Jones in the July 2013 issue of IGS News, IGS India’s Activity Index score ranked 8th out of 36 chapters for 2012. Given the number of events and publications happening in India in 2013, it’s likely the chapters score will continue to rise.
The Indian Journal of Geosynthetics and Ground Improvement (IJGGI) is distributed to all members of the Indian Chapter of the IGS. Additionally, some issues are shared with IGS members via www.geosyntheticssociety.org.
