North American Geosynthetics Society President, Bob Mackey, P.E.

On July 9 (Wednesday), the North American Geosynthetics Society (NAGS) will host a live webinar on “Composite Drainage Nets – Design and Testing.” The geocomposites-focused session will be hosted by NAGS President Robert Mackey, P.E., a veteran of the geosynthetics field with nearly 30 years of civil and environmental engineering experience. He is a long-time, active member of the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS) and ASTM.
Canadian Geotechnical Society (CGS), NAGS, and IGS members all enjoy a substantial discount on registration. Students also qualify for a highly reduced rate.

DATE: July 9
TIME: 1:00 – 2:00 pm EDT
This will be the second in what is, for 2014, a quarterly series of live webinar events from NAGS.
The first NAGS webinar took place in March 2014 and was led by Prof. Kerry Rowe, one of the most distinguished experts on geosynthetics in the world. Dr. Rowe’s talk, “Recent insights on the performance of GCLs in bottom liners and covers,” shared insight on geosynthetic clay liner (GCL) system performance and challenges (e.g., water retention curve, effect of hydration, panel shrinkage), GCL-geomembrane composite liner system performance, wrinkles in geomembranes, and much more.
Mackey’s presentation continues the high-level, internationally-relevant education.

COMPOSITE DRAINAGE NETS (GEOCOMPOSITES)

Composite Drainage Nets (Geocomposites)The development of composite drainage nets (CDNs) (a.k.a. “geocomposites”) has advanced from the initial biaxial nets to tri-axial nets to the current composite drainage products of various geosynthetic materials and structures. The use of CDNs requires a fundamental knowledge of the CDN components and the specifications for those materials.
Geocomposites, Drainage Nets in LandfillsThis North American Geosynthetics Society webinar will address the various design, testing and installation issues one must consider with composite drainage nets. Issues include:

  • Various CDNs and their components
  • Ply adhesion (geotextile/geonet)
  • Flow pattern considerations
  • Reduction factors
  • Creep reduction estimates and testing
  • Transmissivity testing
  • Design specifications (cap and leachate collection)
  • Installation issues
  • Construction and historical issues

FUTURE WEBINARS

The North American Geosynthetics Society (NAGS) will continue its educational offerings. Prof. Richard Brachman (Queen’s University, Canada), who is helping NAGS develop its lineup of technical speakers, has said that Prof. Jonathan Fannin (University of British Columbia) will lead the third quarter 2014 webinar. The date and time for that session is forthcoming.
