Councils often turn to rock-lined or concrete channel lining systems for open channels and to regulate flow to prevent flooding and property damage.
Last year Geofabrics Australasia launched the SmartDitch® Channel Lining System to provide another alternative to Australia’s engineers and local governments.

SmartDitch® is a leak-free channel lining system engineered to control and direct the flow of water or critical fluids. Made from proven UV resistant HDPE, SmartDitch®’s unique corrugated design helps regulate the flow of water from flat to steep grades so that the drainage and flow patterns designed are maintained.

All SmartDitch® products are manufactured from High Density Polyethylene plastic (HDPE) in the USA by an ISO 9001 accredited factory.

MegaDitch™ is the infinitely expandable equivalent for larger channels.

Both products come standard in black but are also available in green and tan to fit in with the surrounding environment.

CHANNEL LINING SYSTEMS – BENEFITS

The versatility of SmartDitch® makes it the best solution for many applications. The multiple sizes, shapes and fittings simplify design and minimise cost. SmartDitch® Channel System provides a cost-effective alternative to concrete lined channels and rock lined channels, whilst maintaining the ability to manage flow velocity without increasing channel width.

Alternative Channel Lining

Multiple sizes are available to match a wide variety of applications and the lightweight construction makes it ideal for difficult-to-access or uneven terrains. The product has a projected minimum life-span of 20 years and is 100% recyclable. Individual panels can also be reused or replaced.

INSTALLATION & DURABILITY

The system is lightweight, flexible and easy to handle. Once installed, the deep-ribbed design provides exceptional strength and flow control. In fact, once the trench or ditch has been prepared to receive the panels, the rest of the installation is quick and easy. No special equipment is needed to put the base and wall sections in place and complete the ditch assembly.

SmartDitch® is extremely durable, and its physical properties allow it to perform well in both hot and cold environments. The high-density polyethylene (HDPE) material does not erode, crack or corrode and can withstand exposure to weather, erosion, abrasive flows, corrosion and even the most aggressive chemical attacks.

IN PRACTICE

Shoalhaven City Council recently used the MegaDitch™ Channel Lining System as a cost-competitive alternative to a concrete box culvert design. The project was highlighted on page 25 in the IPWEA Summer Edition Journal.
