It debuted in Berlin during a special session at the 10th International Conference on Geosynthetics (10 ICG) late last September. Now, the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS) has started to distribute and promote its first major video project: “Geosynthetics for Sustainable Development.”
The project, which was led by the IGS Education Committee, has focused on the strong role of geosynthetics in sustainability.
“While sustainable development has increasing international commitment, its successful implementation requires us to employ state-of-the-art technologies and materials to both conserve energy and promote more durable, sustainable structures,” says Sam Allen, Immediate Past Chair of the IGS Eduation Committee. “Adoption of this approach mandates the awareness and robust use of geosynthetics and the realization of their long-term benefits.”
Allen’s comments are included in a statement from the IGS on the larger online sharing of the sustainability video.
The five-minute video includes commentary from Dr. JP Giroud, one of the most honored and influential designers in the field. Dr. Giroud was one of the early adopters of geosynthetics and even coined the terms “geotextile” and “geosynthetic.”
A large range of materials (e.g., geomembranes, geogrids, drainage materials) are explained in the video, and key applications are shown in the context of how geosynthetics beneficially improve them:
- Longer road lives
- Stronger water resource conservation
- Surface erosion control
- Environmental Protection
- And much more
“The video seeks to show how geosynthetics are a solution to building sustainable civil, geotechnical and environmental infrastructure projects,” the IGS notes in its release.
