IGS Barriers Workshop IGS Technical Committee on Barriers Workshop The International Geosynthetics Society (IGS) Technical Committee on Barriers has announced it will host a workshop in conjunction with the XVI European Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (XVI ECSMGE 2015). The main conference takes place 13 – 17 September 2015 in Edinburgh. The IGS Barriers Workshop will be held on September 14.
The tentative program, released on the IGS website, includes:

  • Introduction and Framework of IGS TC-Barriers
  • Barriers in coal ash applications in North America
  • Durability of geomembranes in hydraulic applications
  • Geosynthetics for Fukushima recovery – Storage of nuclide contaminated soil and MSW disposal
  • Barrier systems for noise barriers with contaminated soils
  • Introduction of ISO Geosynthetics Guide on Barriers – Panel Discussion

The session is scheduled for 13:30 – 17:00 in Room Harris 2 at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre.
The IGS Technical Committee on Barriers Chair, Kent von Maubeuge (kvmaubeuge@naue.com) and the Committee Secretary, Takeshi Katsumi (katsumi.takeshi.6v@kyoto-u.ac.jp) welcome inquiries and participation from the geosynthetics community.
COMMITTEE ROLES INCREASING
The International Geosynthetics Society (IGS) has grown substantially in recent years, at a time when many professional groups have struggled to retain members. Part of the IGS’s success has been activities and technical contributions from its committees.
The Technical Committee on Barriers has been very active, documenting global regulations on barriers, collecting field performance studies, developing literature for the society’s thousands of members, and more.
For more information on the committee’s work, events organized by or held under the auspices of the IGS, technical resources, and membership information, visit the IGS website: www.geosyntheticssociety.org.
XVI ECSMGE 2015
The theme for XVI ECSMGE 2015 is “Geotechnical Engineering for Infrastructure and Development.” The British Geotechnical Association (BGA) and the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) are involved in the conference’s organization.
Plenty of geosynthetic professionals will be on hand. Companies such as Bonar, Huesker, Maccaferri, NAUE, Tencate, Tensar, and BOSTD are involved in the sponsorship and technical exhibition.
