ITA Elects Brazil’s Tarcisio Celestino as New President
Tarcisio Barreto Celestino has been elected to lead the International Tunneling and Underground Space Association (ITA)

During the World Tunnel Congress in San Franciso, Brazil’s Tarcisio Barreto Celestino was elected President of the International Tunneling and Underground Space Association (ITA). Celestino, an engineer, is currently the President of the Brazilian Committee on Tunnels, part of ABMS (Brazilian Association of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering).
ITA represents and connects 73 countries and their affiliated tunneling groups.
Celestino was elected with the support of 56 of 57 possible votes. The ITA General Assembly was held April 27 in conjunction with the World Tunnel Congress (WTC 2016).
“This is a very important moment for Brazilian geotechnical engineering, the Brazilian Committee on Tunnels, and to our Association,” said ABMS president André Assis.
Assis, who was the first Brazilian to lead the ITA, was present at the WTC meeting. He was part of Brazil’s 50-member delegation.
“We wish success to the new president of the ITA,” said Assis. “ABMS is ready to collaborate in any way possible.”
Brazil hosted the World Tunnel Congress in 2014 at Iguazu Falls.
The World Tunnel Congress 2017 (WTC 2017) will be held in Bergen, Norway, 9 – 15 June 2017. Abstracts for the event, including on geosynthetic waterproofing technologies, are accepted through 15 June 2016.
