The Geosynthetic Institute has announced 11 recipients for the 2017 – 2018 Fellowships. These annually awarded GSI research grants are given out, in consultation with the GSI Board of Directors, to master’s and doctoral level applicants studying geosynthetics.

GSI’s program issues numerous awards, each worth up to USD $5,000, during the fellowship awards cycle. Candidates with a vision of longer-term research may apply for successive year awards.

GSI 2017 – 2018 FELLOWSHIPS

This year’s fellowship winners include 11 recipients from different universities and representing a wide range of geosynthetics topics. The 2017 – 2018 Fellowships:

  • Cihan Cengiz (TC Bogazici University, Turkey ) – Seismic behavior of soft clay foundations under embankments using geosynthetic encased columns
    Advisor: Erol Guler
  • Susom Dutta (University of Massachusetts – Lowell, USA) – Novel geotextiles for energy harvesting
    Advisor: Pradeep Kurup
  • Behnoud  Kermani (Pennsylvania State University, USA) – Numerical investigation on the effectiveness and durability of geotextiles against migration of subgrade soil to overlying granular layer in pavement systems
    Advisor: Ming Xiao
  • Wolfgang  Lieske (Ruhr-Universitat, Germany) – Polymer-modified bentonite for the application in geosynthetic Clay Liners (GCL)
    Advisor: Tom Schanz
  • Chuang Lin (Missouri University of Science and Technology, USA) – Analyzation of wicking fabrics used to remove capillary water in road embankments
    Advisor: Xiong Zhang
  • Mohamed Morsy (Queen’s University, Canada) – Selection of a realistic and representative stress crack resistance for use in design
    Advisor: Kerry Rowe
  • Nicole Robey (University of Florida, USA) – Landfill EGS wind uplift research: complementary field and wind tunnel assessments
    Advisor: Tim Townsend
  • Siavash Vahidi (Drexel University, USA) – Evaluation of wrinkle induced strains in geomembranes using a finite element method (FEM)
    Advisor: Grace Hsuan
  • Rodrigo Borela Valente (Georgia Institute of Technology, USA) – Numerical modeling of aggregate-geogrid composite behavior for multiaxial geogrids in pavement applications
    Advisor: David Frost
  • Dongfang Wang (University of Massachusetts – Amherst, USA) – Enhancement of geosynthetics with ultra-hydrophobic and long-lasting organogeopolymers
    Advisor: Guoping Zhang
  • Thomas Williams (University of Virginia, USA) – Protecting geosynthetic in liner systems from atmospheric exposure by utilizing a surcharge layer
    Advisor: Craig Benson
