Proper deployment of geomembranes to avoid Wrinkles, Bridging, and Ballasting during Installation
The potential negative impact of wrinkles in a lining system on geomembrane performance (and the reduced ability to detect damage that occurs on a wrinkle) has been a very hot topic in the field, with best practice solutions coming about through efforts from manufacturers, lined facility designers, installers, and CQA professionals.

WAVE MANAGEMENT & PROPER DEPLOYMENT OF GEOMEMBRANES

An intrinsic property of all exposed geomembranes is that they expand and contract depending upon the ambient temperature. During times of high temperature, this is evidenced by the appearance of waves (wrinkles) in installed geomembranes before they are backfilled or otherwise covered. The thicker and stiffer the geomembrane, the more the phenomenon is evidenced. This webinar will show that such waves when backfilled will not disappear. Laboratory and field exhumations indicate that the waves squash. This process forms creases in the subsequent installed material.

The disadvantages of this situation is the lack of intimate contact, increased potential seepage, tensile stresses at folds, mini-dam formation, and possible equipment damage to the tops of folds. Proper deployment practices, however, can be used by the contractor/installer to avoid waves/wrinkles in the geomembrane as a facility goes into service. These proper deployment strategies include:

  • Push/accumulate/cut/seam
  • Fixing berms
  • White sheet
  • Temporary tents
  • Backfill in early morning or at night

The webinar advances in progressive stages of overview/background, fate of waves, implications of entombed waves, achieving intimate contact, and summary/recommendations.
