The International Geosynthetics Society is dedicated to promoting the awareness and proper utilization of geosynthetic technologies in infrastructure. In support of its mission and backed by its 4000+ global membership from the geotechnical engineering field, the IGS has released its Guide to the Specification of Geosynthetics 2018.
This specification guide, available to all as a free PDF download, is the fifth and most current edition of the guide.

The document’s objective is to serve as a readily accessible, generic resource to those who write construction specifications with geosynthetics involved. As such, it is relevant to specification writers, material buyers, and installers working in all sectors of civil engineering: mining, coal ash, environmental remediation, road building, waste management, wastewater, and much more.

The IGS website has also updated its specification examples web page. These examples are referenced within and linked to from the specification guide as well.  The examples web page includes sections dedicated to geotextiles, geogrids, barrier materials, drainage materials, and erosion control materials. It also includes resources for writing specifications with multiple materials.
The committee that has developed the guide notes that it has harmonized definitions and specialist term usage with another key IGS document: Recommended Descriptions of Geosynthetics Functions, Geosynthetics Terminology, Mathematical and Graphical Symbols.

As with any publication of this nature, due diligence is still required of the user. The 5th edition of the geosynthetic specification guide is to be used as an assistive resource for specification writers, but responsibility for the spec remains with the user. This includes the need to ensure the accuracy of details such as material values for a project, material and design suitability for an application, and proper observance of any and all regulations and requirements where a project is to be executed.
The International Geosynthetics Society invites all stakeholders in geotechnical engineering works to download Guide to the Specification of Geosynthetics 2018 (PDF), utilize the example specifications page and the resources it links to, and learn more about the IGS’s committees, global chapters and activities, and membership.
