In April, the inaugural Geo-U training and networking event will be held in Austin, Texas. Four concurrent engineering courses will take place 8 – 9 April 2020 and optional certification exams will be held on 10 April 2020. A half-day marketing course will also be offered on April 10. One of the most intriguing courses being offered is Landfill Design Considerations in the Age of Sustainable Development.
LANDFILL DESIGN & SUSTAINABILITY
The Geo-U 2020 landfill design course will be led by two world-renowned instructors: Dr. George Koerner, P.E. (Director, Geosynthetic Institute) and Abigail Gilson, MS, P.E. (Senior Engineer, TRI Environmental). The course they’ve created will advise design engineers and regulators as to the engineering design challenges related to capacity optimization at today’s landfills.
“It is harder than ever to site new green field disposal facilities,” they write. “Many existing landfill operators seek engineering solutions to help maximize the disposal capacity of their existing landfills.”

In light of the new emphasis on carbon footprint, the course revisits the sustainable landfill concept. While the concept is not new, it can be viewed in terms of today’s focus on sustainability and how it relates to reduction of emissions and reducing environmental impact.

The landfill design course takes a look at how landfills can achieve the goals of being environmentally friendly and cost-effective at the same time. It will show how geosynthetics can improve landfill performance, and how they are the key to eventually fulfilling the promise of a sustainable landfill.
