Geosynthetics in India ASTM D35 in IndiaASTM International Committee D35 on Geosynthetics has announced a special geosynthetics seminar and associated committee meetings to held in Mumbia, India 2 – 4 December 2015 at the Bombay Textile Research Association (BTRA) headquarters.

The move is welcomed. India is home to the world’s fastest growing population and one of the most ambitious and dynamic infrastructure programs. It is also home to a robust manufacturing history in textiles. Just as in the United States and Europe, textile knowledge has led to growing specialization in polymeric materials, including geosynthetics.
Standardization efforts are in need. This sentiment has been promoted by multiple organizations, including the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS).
IGS India, in fact, will host the 6th International Conference on Geosynthetics (GeoAsia 6) in New Delhi in November 2016.
BTRA is an excellent host for ASTM’s symposium. The association has a long history of research and interaction with polymeric materials engineering. Of note, in September 2014, BTRA formalized an agreement with the Geosynthetic Institute (GSI) to create GSI-India.
Beyond events and third-party developments, India has a strong and quickly development manufacturing industry for geosynthetics. ASTM’s gathering will provide an exceptional opportunity for current and future stakeholders in the Indian industry to connect, exchange domestic and international insight, and create a future for these standards in the world’s largest democracy.
