TenCate Geosynthetics has published a new video that features how TenCate Geotube® technology was used to repair and protect a Caribbean shoreline. The immediate area included a large utility company, which had seen the shoreline erode significantly over a period of years. Storm surges with waves exceeding 3m had been a major factor in the waterfront deterioration, which had taken 50m of beach. The severity threatened the power plant and its coal storage.
The utility company needed to reclaim the beach and fortify the shoreline to prevent a breach of its critical infrastructure.
CARIBBEAN SHORELINE PROJECT DETAILS
In addition to the video, the full details of the project are found in a new case study (PDF).
Some of the highlights include:
- A combination of stacked 45’ and 34’ circumference Geotube® containers were used
- Geotube® Flat End technology was used to achieve a constant elevation and seamless transition across Geotube® container junctions
- Scour aprons were included for use under the base layer to protect the containers
- Rock, sand, and local vegetation were placed over a special 4 meter high, 182 meter long Geotube® structure designed to restore the storm-damaged ecosystem
- The installation withstood the August 2015 Hurricane Erika, which passed directly through the site
