A Nevada First: Geomembrane-Cap for Leach Pad Closure

0
Barrick Gold has had installed what it believes to be the first geomembrane cap over a leach pad in mine closure operations. The cap has been installed to prevent cyanide washout from the zone due to snow melt. Roughly 430,000 square feet of geomembrane from Agru America have been installed. Work will be completed on the site in the next few weeks. Sierra Geosynthetics is conducting the installation. Learn more here.;

Gundle's Experience Wins Out in Madibeng

0
The Local Municipality of Madibeng this week denied claims that a contractor was appointed on a contract of almost R3 million at the landfill site in De Kroon without a tender being issued. Gundle Geosynthetics (Gauteng, South Africa) was appointed directly, the council has said, in order to guarantee expert work at the environmentally sensitive site. While local contractors may be upset about not having the work, they must understand that most geosynthetic types require careful handling and experience. They must not be confused with earthworks. Piped In

0
The availability of natural gas pipelines is crucial to the profitability of large dairies converting manure into power in the Midwest. But with more pipelines being built across rural areas to connect major urban zones, the connection points are increasing. In states like Wisconsin, that's helping transform farms with lined lagoons into power centers. Expedited permitting is also helping. Learn more here.;

Here's Grand Forks in Your Eye!

0
It's not often that someone responds to criticism of landfilll proposals (in newspapers) with actual civil engineering information. In the area of Grand Forks, North Dakota, that has happened. Dr. Harvey Gullicks, an associate professor of civil engineering at the University of North Dakota, has waded into the fray to explain why the placement of garbage in a landfill is not, as previously published in the paper, like pushing a sharp object into a thin, home garbage bag. Gullicks note is appreciated by the engineering community--though, to judge by one of the vituperative responses, not by landfill critics in Grand Forks.
