Atlanta landfill to become solar power plant

Republic Services is progressing on the conversion of the 48-acre Hickory Ridge Landfill into the largest solar farm in Georgia. Using $2 million in federal stimulus money, Republic is closing the facility and, with an exposed geomembrane cap and thin-film photovoltaic cells, turning the site into a power generation source for the Georgia Environmental Facilities Authority. It's not often that someone responds to criticism of landfilll proposals (in newspapers) with actual civil engineering information. In the area of Grand Forks, North Dakota, that has happened. Dr. Harvey Gullicks, an associate professor of civil engineering at the University of North Dakota, has waded into the fray to explain why the placement of garbage in a landfill is not, as previously published in the paper, like pushing a sharp object into a thin, home garbage bag. Gullicks note is appreciated by the engineering community--though, to judge by one of the vituperative responses, not by landfill critics in Grand Forks.

Erosion along the Brahmaputra River in India has reaped considerable disaster in the past 15 years. An article in the Assam Tribune indicates that erosion has claimed 28 villages, one police station, eight schools, four tea estates, one PWD road and wide stretches of agricultural land. A new project aims to stem some of that erosion by installing geotextile bags along multiple kms of the riverbank. Learn more here.;

In 2009 SIBUR basic ecological indexes displayed a decrease in impact of the Company's production facilities on the environment. Pollutant emissions to the atmosphere decreased by 7%. Generation of consumer and production waste decreased by 6%. The amount of waste water decreased in the last year by 12%. SIBUR considers processing of the associated petroleum gas (APG) generated during oil production a major part of its ecological mission. In 2009 APG processing increased by 10% as compared to 2008 reaching 16.8 billion m3.

BC News: Repairs Begin at Esquimal Lagoon

After more than five months of traffic closure, the Esquimalt Lagoon bridge in Colwood, British Columbia--on Victoria Island--is being repaired. The City has placed timbers at the base of the abutments to protect them from waves. On the north side, a section of the asphalt is being removed and fill material excavated out.
