Cork's Landfill to Car Park Plan

0
The construction of a 'Park and Ride' facility at a site in Cork City, Ireland has been proposed. The former landfill ceased operations more than 30 years ago. The proposed park-and-ride facility would sit upon 18,914 sq. m of the site. Some ground remediation and dynamic compaction would be required, and a geosynthetic barrier system would be installed to control any gas and leachate. Learn more here.;

Preserving the C&O Canal

0
The 185-mile-long, historic Chesapeake and Ohio Canal--more familiarly known as the C&O Canal--was compeleted in 1850 and served as a major transport corridor for goods such as lumber and grain. Today, it is a national park surrounded by more than 12,000 acres of land. Not long ago, a towpath began to fail when drainage pipe broke. The saturated slope gave way and exposed a main water line for Arlington County, Virginia. Repair of the slope was key both for the preservation of this historic canal and for the safety of Arlington's water supply. Maccaferri's Green Terramesh® system was selected to provide slope stability and vegetation for the natural look park patrons and officials seek along the C&O. Construction was quick, economical and effective. Read Pino Cignarella's case study.

New Low Profile Chamber Helps Save Time and Labor

0
Advanced Drainage Systems, Inc. (ADS) has added an innovative new product to its Arc line of plastic leaching chambers to meet the needs of septic leach field installers. The new Arc 36LP is specially designed for challenging installations such as high groundwater conditions or other site restrictions. Installing systems requiring shallow burial depths has several advantages, including greater separation from the groundwater, enhanced aerobic bacterial action and improved percolation rates. The new Arc 36LP chamber leverages more than 40 years of experience designing state-of-the-art engineered structures.

Central China Hit by Drought, as Reservoirs Become ‘Dead Water’

0
A severe drought along the Yangtze River region in central China has rendered nearly 1,400 reservoirs in Hubei Province temporarily unusable, devastated farm fields and made drinking water scarce, according to a report on Monday by Xinhua, the state news agency. One-fourth of all small reservoirs had what officials called “dead water” remaining, which could be pumped for use only in an emergency. Learn more here.;

Turks and Caicos Island to Modernize Landfills

0
Within the next 12 months, Turks and Caicos Island in the West Indies will replace its small, unlined dumps with a large, new, modern landfill with a geosynthetic lining system. The landfill will include a self-sealing geosynthetic clay liner (GCL) under a 60-mil layer of a polyethylene geomembrane. Refuse will be spread and compacted daily over a small 100-by-50-foot working face and covered with a layer of soil, completely closing off any open waste areas each day. Learn more here.;

Environmentalists Send EPA Intent-to-Sue Notice on Coal Ash

0
Bloomberg News is reporting that Earthjustice and 11 environmental groups have notified the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that they intend to sue the agency to force it to issue regulations for the disposal of coal ash. The agency has waffled for the past decade on whether to regulate coal ash disposal at all, though more recent policy discussions would suggest some sort of regulation is forthcoming. Even regulated as non-hazardous waste, it could compel the utilization of geosynthetic barrier systems on the federal level, such as are required for municipal solid waste landfills. Engineering Events to Watch, 3Q and 4Q

0
By most reports, 2012's construction activity has been furious. Many manufacturers have moved advanced expansion plans begun or announced in 2011, and those decisions seems to be paying off as the on-site services side of the industry (e.g., installation and CQA) also reports significant increases in business. A number of companies have even hired on multiple new full-time employees and expected a considerable growth in seasonal work positions. But as the mid-year work dies down (at least enough to breathe), events take over the calendar. Here are four events (3 in Europe, 1 in the US) Geosynthetica is looking forward to.
