0
The Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) which is all set to be implemented in Orissa starting May has adopted a multi-pronged approach. The project, estimated at Rs 200 crore, will have various components most of which deal with coastal conservation. For a long-term solution to the problem, anti-erosion control steps had been put in place through use of geosynthetic tubes and the pratice will be in place through the project period. But those certainly weren't the only subjects discussed in the sessions, keynote lectures, and on the exhibit hall floor. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then you've some "reading" to do in our photo essay from Geosynthetics 2009.

ShoreMax® Soft Revetment Scour Protection Mat Supercharging Green Alternatives to Hard Armor

0
In recent large-scale channel testing by the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials' National Transportation Product Evaluation Program (AASHTO-NTPEP), North American Green's new ShoreMax® Soft Revetment Scour Protection Mat pushed turf reinforcement mat (TRM) performance to a new level. As one of the newest additions to Tensar's North American Green erosion control line, the ShoreMax® Mat delivered unprecedented unvegetated results in NTPEP's ASTM channel testing, withstanding shear stresses up to 8.6 lbs/ft2 and velocities exceeding 19 ft/sec. Tested with a Vmax3® P550 TRM underlayment, the completely unvegetated ShoreMax system actually exceeded the level of performance provided by many fully vegetated TRMs.

Following heavy rains in May, water from a storage pond at the North Mara gold mine seeped through the walls of a storage pond. Barrick Gold, owners of the facility, have had to deal with multiple acts of theft and vandalism at the site, including sections of liner (in use!) being stolen. Some locals maintain the mine has caused the death of fish, crops and animals. Up to 1000 cattle have been said to have died--but no evidence has been offered in support of the allegations. It's a difficult situation, to say the least. Learn more here.;
