Biosphere 2's Next Step Includes Geosynthetics

0
The next phase of Biosphere 2 is about to begin. In this next step, the innovative research site in Arizona will enclose soil slopes and investigate how vegetation, topography and other factors affect rainwater's journey through a watershed. One of the tools being studied and used to help make the facility sustainable is solar cells adhered to geosynthetics. Learn more here.;

Climate change: Survey shows increased public concern, awareness of economic benefits of action

0
More than two Europeans in three see climate change as a very serious problem and almost 80% consider that taking action to combat it can boost the economy and jobs, a special Eurobarometer survey published today shows. The poll, carried out in June 2011, found that the European public is more concerned about climate change than it was in 2009 - and that climate change remains a greater worry than the economic situation. Still Down, but Melbourne's Water Is Up

0
Water has been in dwindling supply in Australia in recent years. Drought has ravished farms and rivers are drying up. Geosynthetic liners and floating covers have helped stem some water loss to seepage and evaporation. Officials now report that the month of October was the most successful month of water gain in 17 years. The long-term average of water levels in reservoirs is still 20% down; but the gaining of water at this difficult time is worth recognizing. Conservation technologies, smarter citizen use, and a bit of meteorological luck have combined to compel some needed change. Learn more here.;

Guam's Landfill Situation

0
Warm island life can be admirable…but landfilling issues are usually costlier. In the US territory of Guam, the proposed new double-liner cell system for a much-needed 141-acre site is a difficult pill to swallow. Guam reluctance to adopt federally mandated environmental controls led to the waste collection and disposal network being put in receivership. The receiver estimates $113 million is needed to construct and operate the new site. But once the plan is put in place, Guam will finally have a modern landfill capable of supporting its population safely. Learn more here.;
