Guam's Landfill Situation

0
Warm island life can be admirable…but landfilling issues are usually costlier. In the US territory of Guam, the proposed new double-liner cell system for a much-needed 141-acre site is a difficult pill to swallow. Guam reluctance to adopt federally mandated environmental controls led to the waste collection and disposal network being put in receivership. The receiver estimates $113 million is needed to construct and operate the new site. But once the plan is put in place, Guam will finally have a modern landfill capable of supporting its population safely. Learn more here.;

NAUE Calendar Photo Wins Competition

0
When international geosynthetics manufacturer NAUE GmbH & Co. KG set out to put together its annual calendar, the company could hardly have anticipated that its photography would gain recognition from a major German news source and be subsequently entered in a larger prize competition. Yet, that is exactly what has happened. A photograph from the 2011 NAUE calendar, unveiled during the recent German Geotechnical Society (DGGT) biennial Baugrundtagung in Munich, has been selected by readers of FOCUS in the "Images of Research" contest. Next up, the photograph will be considered for a prize during a December contest in Berlin.

PCBs Found in Soon-to-Be-Dredged Indiana Harbor and Ship Canal

0
University of Iowa researchers have confirmed that sediments of the Indiana Harbor and Ship Canal (IHSC) in East Chicago, Ind., are contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The PCB levels found here are comparable to other PCB-contaminated sites in the U.S., most established by law as Superfund Sites, which requires the removal of contaminants from environmental media such as soil, groundwater and sediment. The IHSC is not a Superfund Site.

Side Benefits of Bournemouth's Geotextile Reef

0
The dispute continues over whether England's first artificial reef--created with the placement of geotextile bags--has fulfilled its goals. Some (including many surfers, for whom the reef was ostensibly created) believe it has achieved only 4 of 11 stated goals. The design team believes it has met 10 of 11 goals. But what everyone seems to agree on is the undersea life it has promoted. The reef has developed vegetation and fishing has improved. Two studies are tracking it. Learn more here.;
