Disastrous Contracts: Cumberland County's Bioreactor Project

0
While bioreactor landfills can be a very beneficial and successful endeavor, Cumberland County, New Jersey has experienced one contracting mishap after another. Companies have won bids and gone out of business. Another has shuttered its waste management division--without completing its contracted work. It's an unfortunate case for what was once a hopeful project and involves some good companies too; but the overall situation has been extraordinarily unlucky. Learn more here.;

Credits for Lagoon Covers

0
The lagoon cover at the Miedema Dairy in Ohio blankets a 350-by-160-foot section of a 350-by-305-foot lagoon. Liquid manure enters the lagoon at the covered end and gradually flows toward the uncovered section. The cover is made of 60-mil, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) geomembrane. A new program coordinated by the Environmental Credit Corp. offers farmers a way to finance manure lagoon covers by selling carbon credits. Read about it here (PDF). Learn more here.;

Brown County Update

0
An update from Ohio now where operators of the Brown County landfill had hoped to expand from its current 72.5 acres to 208 acres. Even though the Environmental Protection Agency had been in agreement that this significant expansion could be done safely--Ohio, many readers will recall, has been the site of many landfill concerns this past year, including a major cell fire--the site operators scaled back their request to 153 acres. Liner installation on the next phase should begin in late spring 2009 or early summer. Learn more here.;

Geotube project aims to reinforce eroded dune line

0
Officials for Tri-State Dredging of Philadelphia and the state Department of Environmental Protection will begin a 60-day project to reinforce the dwindling dune line from Leeward to Nelson avenues. Several severe storms since last fall have eroded the beach off the streets and jeopardized oceanfront homes. The project will use Geotubes, massive textile sacks filled with sand, to bolster dunes to 10 feet in height. The same method has successfully protected dunes in Sea Isle City, Upper Township and Atlantic City, DEP officials said. Learn more here.;

Old Product Could Help Solve New Oil Problem

0
American Excelsior has been producing all natural wood fibers often referred to as "Curlex Excelsior" since 1888 and the fibers are still in use today for applications in ceiling board construction, packaging, display, erosion and sediment control and even as a filter media for oil. Now, there may be a use in oil spills and clean-up. Since Curlex fibers have a unique ability to cling to one another due to the "barbs" on each curly strand, it helps the all natural biodegradable fibers create an interlocking effect that adds integrity to the finished product. EVOH Might Be the Answer

0
The community of Brookfield, Wisconsin has had a moratorium on the development of five homes in a 25-home subdivision sited close to a former landfill. The town council has been concerned with how much methane might escape through the landfill cap into homes. The use of an EVOH-enhanced geosynthetic barrier might be the answer. EVOH layers have been shown to significantly increase the gas barrier performance of membranes. Incorporated into thicker geomembranes, capping and gas barrier needs could be satisfied fully in a single product. Learn more here.;
