Infiltrator Systems, Inc. (ISI) has announced that it has agreed to acquire the assets of the septic chamber business of Advanced Drainage Systems, Inc. (ADS) and its subsidiaries. As part of the acquisition, ADS has entered into a long-term, non-exclusive distribution agreement with Infiltrator Systems and will continue to market and sell the Arc(TM) and BioDiffuser(TM) product lines.

The Fabricated Geomembrane Institute (FGI) headquartered at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will award research funds for an initial two-year period to support ideas that advance the use of fabricated geomembranes in containment applications. The FGI research grant is $10,000 per year for two years (subject to annual review). The research can focus on any aspect of fabricated geomembranes such as: formulation, welding, field testing, installation, durability in exposed and unexposed applications, chemical resistance, or any other measure of fabricated geomembrane performance. Projects that involve participation by the private sector (especially FGI members) or other universities are welcomed and encouraged. The FGI will establish an advisory committee to evaluate, award, and monitor the projects. Students and faculty members are encouraged to “connect” with one or more FGI Members before submitting a proposal to better understand the problems that need to be solved in the field of fabricated geomembranes. Greenwich, Connecticut--like much of the northeastern United States--suffered extensive flood damage from the most recent nor'easter storms. Now, a consultant's report has recommended a number of flood defense solutions from bridge management to drainage system replacements. The total cost of the 33 recommended projects is estimated to be $100 million. Learn more here.;

Engineers investigating the raw water reservoir in Fremont, Ohio have discovered some karst. Among other effects, karst can cause seepage, piping, and instability. The engineers' report from Arcadis recommend a composite liner system (HDPE or LLDPE geomembrane and GCL) across the entire slope, protected by geotextile and cover soil, and geogrid reinforcement. The city has roughly one year to complete the reservoir project and must now seek approval to alter the design and include a lining system. Learn more here.;

Veteran Falls Memorial Park is a donation-supported installation in Granbury, Texas. The site has the largest memorial waterfall in the United States at 290 feet in length. The entire falls construction is underlain with geomembrane for water conservation. A five-acre park is set around the falls. Families of soldiers killed in action may, for free, have a stone engraved with that solder's name, rank and date of death and placed in the falls. Learn more here.;

The Fabricated Geomembrane Institute (FGI) held its first short course ("Constructing with Fabricated Geomembranes") on 23 October in Denver, Colorado. Tim Stark reports that 66 attendees took part and numerous industry experts presented on topics from secondary containment to EIA geomembranes to welding and much more. Specialty films can inhibit the growth of weeds and pests and promote plant growth, even improving color of crops. But the increasing use of pesticides has caused early failure of films. Also, the effects of photoselective films on pollination by bees are being examined. We have reported here a number of times about the promise of agriculture and aquaculture in Vietnam. The other side of that development, however, is the runoff and pollution that results. In the Mekong Delta, agricultural fertilizer is used at a much higher rate than needed; and aquaculture hectares have increased from 20,000 to 70,000 in a very short time without an accommodating expansion in filtration and pollution controls. The pipeline industry is continuing to grow worldwide to provide increased security of energy and water supply, and with hostile environmental conditions in many locations, the pipeline protection market is expanding to meet the requirements. Noru Tsalic, Consultant at Applied Market Information, has valued the pipe coating market at around 5 billion euros in 2009 and predicts expansion to 6.5 billion euros by 2013.
