Fiber Optic Sensors in Geosynthetics

0
Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors are incredibly versatile. They're used in tiny medical devices and on huge bridges. Often FBG and other types of fiber optic sensors are chosen when many measurements are needed over a long distance and the environment is harsh. A good example of this is the use of FOS in geosynthetic materials used to reinforce earthworks. Tom Graver of Micron Optics writes on this collaboration of technologies and how it could change geosynthetics.

Dewatering with Tubes to Maximize Reservoir Capacity

0
HDR has performed reservoir analysis for the Rivanna Water and Sewer Authority in Virginia. During a public meeting, an HDR representative reported very favorable conditions at the reservoir site and that dredging could help maximize the site's capacity. The study estimated the reservoir's water storage volume at a minimum 1,247 million gallons. The estimated dredging volume totals 1.54 million cubic yards of sediment. Part of the presentation included a video showing how geotextile tubes are used for dewatering. Learn more here.;

Battle looms over tunnel to finish LA-area freeway

0
State Route 710, a freeway heavily used by commuters and trucks hauling goods from the nation's busiest port complex, runs 23 miles from Long Beach to an abrupt end just east of Los Angeles. From there, tens of thousands of vehicles a day spill onto Alhambra city streets to reach other freeways. The 4 1/2-mile gap between the end of the 710 and Interstate 210 in Pasadena is a startling deviation from the rule that freeways are king in California. Learn more here.;
