Middle East Plastics Strategy Seminar

0
Applied Market Information (AMI) will host "The Middle East Plastics Industry Strategy Seminar" on 19 October 2009 in Cologne, Germany. This event has been offered twice already in 2009. This next session is your final chance in 2009 to take part. With an estimated 15 million tons of additional polymerization capacity coming on line in the Middle East in the next three years, the region stands to become a major plastics processing center. Will geosynthetics be part of this boom in production? How will the Middle East's growth affect global markets? The one-day seminar aims to tackle these subjects. Download the PDF brochure. Geomembranes in Anaerobic Digestion: White Paper

0
Anaerobic digestion has become an increasingly popular technology for treating wastewater. Not a new technology, it has been practiced in various industries in the United States for several decades. In the earlier days of its use, companies chose anaerobic digestion as a means for controlling odor as well as to meet industry regulations for waste management. An Ounce of Prevention

0
It's hard to argue with the US General Accounting Office's numbers: 117,000 underground storage tanks are leaking potentially hazardous materials into soils and groundwater. Cleanup would range well beyond $10 billion. The use of geomembranes for secondary containment (not to mention primary containment within tanks!) could spare this threat to the environment and the long-term costs associated with cleanup and redevelopment. Environmentalists Send EPA Intent-to-Sue Notice on Coal Ash

0
Bloomberg News is reporting that Earthjustice and 11 environmental groups have notified the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that they intend to sue the agency to force it to issue regulations for the disposal of coal ash. The agency has waffled for the past decade on whether to regulate coal ash disposal at all, though more recent policy discussions would suggest some sort of regulation is forthcoming. Even regulated as non-hazardous waste, it could compel the utilization of geosynthetic barrier systems on the federal level, such as are required for municipal solid waste landfills. Updating Specs: An Introduction from GMA

0
Andrew Aho, Executive Director of the Geosynthetic Materials Association (GMA), writes: "Geotextile manufacturers are keen to update the specifying community regarding specifications that are outdated and no longer acceptable in the industry. Two tests retired by industry approval standards continue to creep into the occasional specification: the Mullen Burst Test and the Puncture Strength Test. The Mullen test was devised in 1887 by J.W. Mullen as a measure for the puncture strength of paper. Eventually it was adopted by the textile industry along with the Puncture Strength Text. In the 1970s these tests were available to the geotextile industry." Read more, including an open letter to specifiers of geosynthetics.
