Fiber Optic Sensors in Geosynthetics

0
Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors are incredibly versatile. They're used in tiny medical devices and on huge bridges. Often FBG and other types of fiber optic sensors are chosen when many measurements are needed over a long distance and the environment is harsh. A good example of this is the use of FOS in geosynthetic materials used to reinforce earthworks. Tom Graver of Micron Optics writes on this collaboration of technologies and how it could change geosynthetics.

Corps Receives Significant Funding for Missouri River Basin Levee Repairs

0
The Army Corps of Engineers is expected to receive Disaster Relief Appropriations Act funding for the repair of Missouri River Basin levees that were heavily damaged by catastrophic flooding this year. The measure was approved Friday by President Barack Obama. "We expect a majority of qualified repairs to levees and our operating projects will be funded. This supplemental appropriation allows us to move from repairs to a 25-year level of flood risk reduction to making full repairs that offer greater risk reduction," said Brig. Gen. John R. McMahon, commander of the Corps' Northwestern Division.

Hockey Club Bloemendaal to Use Water-Saving Triple-T System

0
Starting next season the European and Dutch national champion Hockey Club Bloemendaal will play its home matches on a Triple-T System hockey pitch. After MHC Ede, HC Bloemendaal is the second field hockey club in the Netherlands to have a pitch based on the Triple-T System. This system is entirely focused on optimum player comfort, high ball speed and low friction in both wet and dry conditions. These characteristics, which support the high-grade technical game, were the main reasons for HC Bloemendaal to opt for this system. TenCate supplied the artificial grass fibers. State to Conserve 20% of Water

0
California water officials are embarking on a two-year environmental assessment of the proposed peripheral canal. The ambitious project would channel water from the Sacramento River around the Delta rather than through. But if the canal is to help the state truly conserve 20% of its water, as the governor has requested, geosynthetic liners should be considered. They have performed magnificently in conservation applications. Learn more here.;
