The Advertising Standards Authority has upheld a challenge made by NAUE that questions whether certain claims in a brochure published by Tensar International could be substantiated. The brochure, "TriAx: A Revolution in Geogrid Technology," detailed the properties and performance advantages of Tensar TriAx geogrids. Within the information in this brochure, Tensar talks about the research that has evolved into a "revolutionary change from a rectangular to a triangular grid aperture." It goes on to say: "This was a revolution in geogrids technology with significant, new improved benefits over the biaxial geogrids." (Continued.)

Expansion: Denied

The Lemons Landfill in Dexter, Missouri has been denied in its initial expansion permit. Operators estimate that the current site has up to eight years of space left, aided in part by recycling endeavors and waste restrictions. Lemons actually accepted less in 2007 than in 2006. Officials denied the permit due to concerns over the liner-quality soil. Lemons will next attempt to prove that the geosynthetic liner and the clay liner will be sufficient to meet permitting standards. Learn more here.;

Australian firm to make HDPE linings

Australia plans to replace much of its imported high density polyethylene geomembrane liners with product manufactured onshore. Garden City Plastics Pty. Ltd. (GCP), based at Monbulk, is investing more than A$5 million (US$4.8 million) in a new manufacturing plant to grab a share of the imported lining business, worth an estimated A$50 million (US$48.1 million). In the country, Common applications include floating covers for waste water ponds at paper mills; dam and water channel lining; to contain waste in landfills; and to contain ash at brown coal-fired power stations. First Oil Sands Project in US Approved

The mining of oil sands has been almost exclusively a Canadian natural resource activity, but the first commercial oil sands project in the United States has just been approved in Utah. Earth Energy Resources Inc. has just received a permit to mine a 62-acre pit in eastern Utah. The company plans to produce bitumen, a tar-like form of petroleum, from oil-soaked sands. HP today presented new research from HP Labs, the company's central research arm, showing how the manure output of cows and the heat output of data centers can be combined to create an economically and environmentally sustainable operation. In a research paper presented at the ASME International Conference on Energy Sustainability in Phoenix, Ariz., the HP researchers explain how a farm of 10,000 dairy cows could fulfill the power requirements of a 1-megawatt (MW) data center--the equivalent of a medium-sized data center--with power left over to support other needs on the farm.
