Artificial Surf Reef in Dubai?

0
A Dubai Surfing Association is forming and representatives are travelling to Australia to investigate geotextile-based artificial reefs. These reefs, made of geotextile bags filled with local sand, are used for both the creation of surfing zones and dive zones, as the bags promote coral growth and provide shelter for marine life. A Disappointing Gift from the EPA: Coal Ash Delay

0
Just in time for the holidays, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has delayed its decision on coal ash storage and facility design. It was anticipated that a rule would have been proposed in 2009, but the agency has asked for a bit more time. One of the solutions that many are hoping for is a requirement for geosynthetic lining systems. With landfills, required lining systems have made waste management the United States' best-rated infrastructure zone. Coal ash disposal would benefit from that care.

Lining Water Treatment Ponds

0
The town of Stayton, Oregon is rectifying a major water loss problem at its water treatment plant. The third filter pond's concrete liner cracked and began leaking a quarter million gallons per day. A polyethylene geomembrane liner is being installed now. It's just part of a major upgrade to stop leakage and improve overall operations. The full project's work should conclude by June 2010. Biosphere 2's Next Step Includes Geosynthetics

0
The next phase of Biosphere 2 is about to begin. In this next step, the innovative research site in Arizona will enclose soil slopes and investigate how vegetation, topography and other factors affect rainwater's journey through a watershed. One of the tools being studied and used to help make the facility sustainable is solar cells adhered to geosynthetics. Learn more here.;

Republic Services Caps Atlanta Landfill with Flexible Solar Cover

0
Republic Services, Inc. (NYSE: RSG) today cemented its leadership in landfill energy production with the dedication of a solar energy cover on its closed Hickory Ridge landfill near Atlanta. The innovative flexible solar cover technology that increases renewable energy output at landfills will generate 1 megawatt (MW) of electricity and meet the needs of 224 homes. The 45-acre closure system, which includes 10 acres of solar panels, is the world's largest landfill solar energy cap and can be seen from planes using the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Quarry Beach Project Approves Geomembrane Liner

0
The former limestone quarry in Batavia, Illinois has been leaking 250,000 gallons per day despite the thick soil and clay layers beneath the 43,000 square foot swimming area. Removal of a Fox River dam has changed the hydrostatic pressure acting on the site and lowered water levels, thus increasing the leakage. Engineers from AECOM recommended installation of a geomembrane liner; that proposal has been approved with a $134,000 contract. Learn more here.;
