Recycling Pit Liners

0
Oil and gas company Williams has been struggling with pit liner code changes that would require the landfilling of liners--only much of the company's operations have been in a county which lacks a landfill that will accept the liners. The company sought alternative uses and found an intriguing one: the nonwoven geotextile cushion and geomembrane are separated, and then they are sent to facilities in Utah and Colorado to be converted into asphalt and non-food grade plastics. Mining vs. Emotion in Costa Rica

0
Jessica Barran's piece at the University for Peace website is firmly against the mining of gold in Costa Rica's northern Crusitas mine, but it may be worth reading for understanding the ways in which communities where resources lay do not see their presence as welcomed. The environmental concerns are real and should be heard--but so should decent science and technology. The right containment materials, facility design, operations and environmental remediation plan can be done responsible. Just as a failure in one country can be cited, so too can a great many successfully managed sites. Learn more here.;

Environmentalists Send EPA Intent-to-Sue Notice on Coal Ash

0
Bloomberg News is reporting that Earthjustice and 11 environmental groups have notified the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that they intend to sue the agency to force it to issue regulations for the disposal of coal ash. The agency has waffled for the past decade on whether to regulate coal ash disposal at all, though more recent policy discussions would suggest some sort of regulation is forthcoming. Even regulated as non-hazardous waste, it could compel the utilization of geosynthetic barrier systems on the federal level, such as are required for municipal solid waste landfills. Sandy Hollow's Landfill – Now with Less Sand

0
The Barrie Examiner (Ontario, Canada) reports that a $4.5 million investment in the Sandy Hollow Landfill is helping extend the landfill's capacity until 2024. The old system involved considerable sand separation layers. The new system involves removing excessive sand, better compaction, modern lining and monitoring technologies, and more efficient daily cover layers. The overall 9-year plan will cost around $44 million and will be a much-welcomed addition to the region's waste management plan. Learn more here.;

Halting Seaside Erosion

0
The Welsh seaside town of Aberaeron has experienced significant erosion along and around its seawall defenses, in part because the defense system was out-of-date, and in part because the land behind it was so low. Regular overtopping required a constant repair process. But a new revetment scheme set on geotextile separation fabrics aims to defuse wave energy and prevent the land beneath from washing out. Cork's Landfill to Car Park Plan

0
The construction of a 'Park and Ride' facility at a site in Cork City, Ireland has been proposed. The former landfill ceased operations more than 30 years ago. The proposed park-and-ride facility would sit upon 18,914 sq. m of the site. Some ground remediation and dynamic compaction would be required, and a geosynthetic barrier system would be installed to control any gas and leachate. Learn more here.;

Flood Protection in India
