Viking Containment Secures Major Australian Project

Viking Containment has been awarded the Reuse Water Lagoon contract for the design, supply and installation of a liner and Floating Cover system by Gold Alliance for SA Water in Adelaide. The water to be stored in the lagoon is reuse water from the wastewater treatment plant it is treated and recycled water for irrigation purposes. The liner system is a reinforced polypropylene complete with a flownet leak detection layer.

Double Protection

Not much can be done to halt the volume of oil washing in on the Gulf of Mexico shores, but some counties are installing a double line of protection with floating booms further out and fabric fencing just off shore. Artificial Field Construction

The Canada-based Daily Commercial News and Construction Record has published a piece about the artificial turf athletic field constructed for Toronto's French School. The installation has involved an artificial grass system that is stabilized and aiding in draining by a geotextile. Additional drainage support is built into the subgrade. Artificial turf installations have increased significantly in recent years at schools as the cost of the systems has come down and the benefits of lower maintenance and water conservation are realized. Lothar Bestmann, Inventor of Sustainable Waterways Construction Measures, Turns 80

Mr. Bestmann, a Hydraulic Engineer with a green thumb, is recognized for pioneering the use of synthetic geotextiles on major marine construction applications in the 1960s, as well as his later inventions of numerous methods for addressing construction, habitat, and water quality on waterways, including specialized use of biodegradable materials to aid plant establishment. In addition to holding patents for many innovations such as floating breakwaters, artificial habitat islands, revegetation modules, and nutrient removal systems, Mr. Bestmann provided planning and design consultation globally through his firm until his retirement. Beginning over 20 years ago, he was tapped by the US Army Corps of Engineers and the Natural Resources Conservation Service to provide international technology transfer to assist in the adoption of engineering and construction practices compatible with sustainable water and habitat management.

A resolution was passed that endorses Version 1.0 of the Code, which is slated for release in November. During the Construction and Demolition Recycling Forum (Baltimore, September 2011), the National Demolition Association (NDA) Environmental Excellence awards recognized some of the most notable, creative and successful projects of the past year. Standard Industries of Ventura, California, was recognized for its Port of Los Angeles demolition project, which had a 99.78% recycling rate. This included finding end markets for the high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pond liners from the site. Learn more here.;

EPA Announces Grant Competition for Communities Wanting to Reduce Pollution at Local Level

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is making nearly $2 million available in 2010 to reduce pollution at the local level through the Community Action for a Renewed Environment (CARE) program. EPA will award CARE cooperative agreements at two levels. Level I awards range from $75,000 to $100,000 and will help establish community-based partnerships to assess toxics problems in their community and consider options for reducing environmental risks.

Monitoring Anaconda Mine Evaporation Ponds

Data gathering work is nearing completion on the pumpback well system evaluation project at the Yerington/Anaconda mine. Pumpback wells were shut off in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the evaporation ponds and to fill in data gaps and further evaluate the project. Pond liners are expected to be repaired or replaced, especially where they use only old clay liners. Learn more here.;
