Global Waste Management Symposium Announces 2010 Technical Program

Penton Media's 2010 Global Waste Management Symposium (GWMS), an international forum for the presentation of peer-reviewed applied and fundamental research and case studies on waste management, announces the technical program for the event 3-6 October 2010 at the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort and Spa. The GWMS will feature 105 educational oral and poster presentations. "The technical program for the 2010 GWMS contains a diverse array of topics that reflect the broad efforts being made to increase sustainable waste management initiatives across the globe," notes Dr. Bryan Staley, co-chair of the GWMS technical committee.

The state of Minnesota and 3M corporation have embarked on a historic $20 million project to reverse three decades of landfill pollution. Long ago, chemicals from 3M's manufacturing were buried in the unlined cell. Since then, pollution has been detected and regulations now require liners. Up to 7 PDHs are available, and government employees may attend the event for free. The full-day short course includes presentations from industry professionals on design, specification, testing, manufacturing, fabrication, installation, inspection, and field testing of different types of fabricated geomembranes for a variety of applications. Nickel comes in two types: laterites and sulphides. The latter is deeper in the earth but easier to process. The former is the dominant sort in today's mining, but not by choice. It seems to be the lionshare of accessible deposits right now. Laterite mining is near the surface, but the nickel requires acid leaching, high temperatures and more stringent environmental controls. The third in a series of four two-day seminars on geosynthetics in Helsinki, Finland attracted about 40 attendees to the Finnish EPA (SYKE) auditorium on 24 and 25 March. The topic was GCLs and Liner CQA. Chairperson was Minna Leppänen of Tampere Technical Institute and President of the new Finnish Chapter of IGS, the Finnish Environmental Agency, and the Finnish Geotechnical Society.
