Geosynthetics Called In for ICZM in India

The Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) which is all set to be implemented in Orissa starting May has adopted a multi-pronged approach. The project, estimated at Rs 200 crore, will have various components most of which deal with coastal conservation. For a long-term solution to the problem, anti-erosion control steps had been put in place through use of geosynthetic tubes and the pratice will be in place through the project period. The EPA's AgSTAR program has been critical in developing the biogas industry, many systems of which utilize geomembranes for manure containment and methane harvesting. The 7th National Conference will be held 27-29 March 2012 in Syracuse, New York. Organizers report that the Holiday Inn Syracuse/Liverpool is holding a block of rooms for conference attendees at a special discounted rate of $94/night, plus tax. Tom Kite on Golf Courses on Remediated Land

The Barclay's transcript archive, over at the PGA Tour website, includes an interview with veteran golfer Tom Kite and Bob Cupp on designing a golf course over a former industrial site. Kite addresses how the course is different from today's minimalist designs, in that converting a formerly polluted site to a beneficial reuse site requires intensive alteration of the land, including genuine containment measures (ie, geosynthetic caps). Randy Massingill is now a member of ProTech Environmental Supply, a division of L & M Supply. Randy was first introduced to the erosion and sediment control industry by C. Joel Sprague of TRI Environmental, where together they built and ran a large-scale erosion and control materials and systems testing and research facility. GeoAfrica Extends Early-Bird Registration Rate

GeoAfrica 2009 is the first African regional conference on geosynthetics. The event, to be held under the auspices of the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS) and hosted by the Geosynthetics Interest Group of South Africa (GIGSA), will take place 2 - 5 September 2009 in Cape Town. ASTM International Selected as Third Party Certifier for USDA's New Biobased Label

ASTM International has been selected to provide certification for the U.S. Department of Agriculture biobased labeling program, a voluntary initiative to identify biobased products and to promote their sale among consumers seeking to purchase goods using renewable resources. As the selected provider, ASTM International will manage the Certification Program for Biobased Products, which will determine the product and package biobased content for manufacturers and vendors that choose to participate.

Sabina and EPA Reach Agreement

The village of Sabina and the Ohio EPA have reached an agreement that’s meant to help the town meet its obligations under the Clean Water Act and eliminate sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs) by the summer of 2013. Extensive sewer liner installations have been completed, a small fine will be paid, and various projects have been agreed upon. Since 2006, has used geotextile bags for sludge dewatering. This process has assisted the village significantly in reaching its goals. Learn more here.;

Tunnel Underway in Oakland

Contractors are breaking ground on the long-awaited fourth bore of the Caldecott Tunnel, a three-year project to relieve traffic congestion in the Oakland, California area. After multiple small tunnel stretches are excavated and reinforced, crews will finish the walls and ceiling by installing a geosynthetic liner to capture drainage water and then add a thick concrete layer reinforced with rebar. EPA Issues $1.75 Million Tribal Grant

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced that Northern Arizona University's Institute for Tribal Environmental Professionals received a $1.75 million grant to support a steering committee of tribal co-regulators to work with EPA on solid and hazardous waste cleanup issues. EPA is also releasing a tribal strategy to advance the protection and restoration of land in Indian country. The new strategy provides a detailed plan of how EPA will strengthen its partnership with tribes to advance the shared goal of protecting public health and land resources in Indian country.
