The US Energy Information Administration's (EIA) annual projections of U.S. energy supply, demand, and prices through 2035 has been released. The projections are based on results from the National Energy Modeling System and includes the Reference case with additional cases examining alternative energy markets. Learn more here.;

County Road 36 along the Crow River in the Otsego area of Minnesota, near Highway 101, has had a 20 to 50% chance of flooding each year. The commonality of floods has cost the area significant road delays, commercial dollars, and maintenance time and money. A new plan is being carried out now to support a critical quarter-mile stretch with a combination of geofoam, geotextile and geogrid. The project should be completed by late November. The Geo-Institute of ASCE's annual congress offers an exceptional opportunity to interact with the international geotechnical engineering community on some of the most pressing topics. Geo-Congress 2012 will be held in Oakland, California 25-29 March 2012. The theme of the event is "State of the Art and Practice in Geotechnical Engineering" and some noted engineers with a geosynthetics background (Craig Benson and David Daniel) will deliver two of the three big lectures: the Ralph B. Peck and Karl Terzaghi Lectures.

Officials for the extensive PCB removal project along the lower Fox River report that the endeavor is ahead of schedule, though a conclusion before 2017 is not expected. Dredging, dewatering and hauling contaminated sediment continues with little interruption or delay. Only three months in, some portions of the river bottom are already to be capped. Geosynthetics are playing a significant role in dewatering and capping. Learn more here.;

The Minnesota Erosion Control Association (MECA) seeks presentations for its 23rd Annual Erosion Control and Stormwater Management Conference and Trade Show, to be held 3-4 March 2011 at the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center in Plymouth, Minnesota. Two types of presentations are being solicited: Local projects completed for stormwater management or erosion and sediment control; New, innovative products for stormwater management or erosion and sediment control. Project presentations will be 15-30 minutes long. Product presentations will be 10-15 minutes. Lumite Inc., a geotextile-manufacturing subsidiary of Thrace Plastics, has acquired a plant from Propex. The 226,000-sq-ft facility in Alto, Georgia will increase Thrace's geotextile production capacity, a welcomed advent as the company seeks to expand within the domestic market. Learn more here.;

The Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) ANTEC® 2010 conference will explore topics of critical importance for improving the environmental sustainability of plastics. The 2010 installment will include some new technology forums on issues of sustainability. Among them: "Polymer Applications for Clean Environments." The 9th International Conference on Geosynthetics (9ICG) will be held in Guaruja, São Paulo, Brazil 23-27 May 2010. The gathering provides an opportunity to learn about and discuss highly technical and scientific geosynthetics issues and their solutions. In addition to the exhibit hall activities, keynote lectures and technical sessions, the 9ICG offers five 3-hour short courses. These courses will be held on the opening day of the event, Sunday, 23 May. Read more.

The city of Franklin, Tennessee has a cracked and leaking reservoir. Officials now believe the best repair scheme will involve dredging the reservoir and lining it with a geosynthetic barrier. More than 60 members of the Industrial Fabrics Association International are preparing products for clean-up efforts in the Gulf of Mexico following the April 20 explosion of the BP-owned Deepwater Horizon oil rig. The oil gusher at the source of the spill, located 5,000 feet below the ocean surface and about 40 miles southeast of the Louisiana coast, is emitting an estimated minimum of 210,000 gallons of oil per day with a possible maximum of more than 10 times that amount. The closing date for abstract submissions to Waterproof Membranes 2009 is NOW: 17 April 2009. A New Zealand-based wastewater plant has become the target of considerable resident anger now that an oxidation pond installed in 2006 for temporary silt dewatering seems to have become more permanent. The South Taranaki District Council (STDC) allowed the installation on a temporary basis but both the council and the wastewater plant seem content to continue the use of geotextiles for dewatering at the site and may now even burry the material on site. Residents are angry that the plan has changed from what they originally approved. Learn more here.;

Dmitry Konov, President of SIBUR, and Aleksandr Gusev, Deputy Governor of the Voronezh region took part in the official opening of Voronezhsintezkauchuk waste water treatment facilities. The waste treatment facilities were switched over to full biological treatment after reconstruction of the existing facilities and construction of new ones. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is seeking proposals for educational sessions at Brownfield 2011--the 14th National Brownfields Conference, scheduled for 3-5 April 2011 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia. The deadline for submitting proposals is now 30 July 2010. The National Brownfields Conference is the largest, most comprehensive conference in the nation focused on cleaning up and redeveloping abandoned, underutilized, and potentially contaminated properties.
