An End to Flooding: Geofoam + Geotextile + Geogrid

County Road 36 along the Crow River in the Otsego area of Minnesota, near Highway 101, has had a 20 to 50% chance of flooding each year. The commonality of floods has cost the area significant road delays, commercial dollars, and maintenance time and money. A new plan is being carried out now to support a critical quarter-mile stretch with a combination of geofoam, geotextile and geogrid. The project should be completed by late November. Fox River Cleanup Ahead of Schedule

Officials for the extensive PCB removal project along the lower Fox River report that the endeavor is ahead of schedule, though a conclusion before 2017 is not expected. Dredging, dewatering and hauling contaminated sediment continues with little interruption or delay. Only three months in, some portions of the river bottom are already to be capped. Geosynthetics are playing a significant role in dewatering and capping. Learn more here.;

The Minnesota Erosion Control Association (MECA) seeks presentations for its 23rd Annual Erosion Control and Stormwater Management Conference and Trade Show, to be held 3-4 March 2011 at the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center in Plymouth, Minnesota. Two types of presentations are being solicited: Local projects completed for stormwater management or erosion and sediment control; New, innovative products for stormwater management or erosion and sediment control. Project presentations will be 15-30 minutes long. Product presentations will be 10-15 minutes. The 9th International Conference on Geosynthetics (9ICG) will be held in Guaruja, São Paulo, Brazil 23-27 May 2010. The gathering provides an opportunity to learn about and discuss highly technical and scientific geosynthetics issues and their solutions. The city of Franklin, Tennessee has a cracked and leaking reservoir. Officials now believe the best repair scheme will involve dredging the reservoir and lining it with a geosynthetic barrier. IFAI members assist in oil spill cleanup

More than 60 members of the Industrial Fabrics Association International are preparing products for clean-up efforts in the Gulf of Mexico following the April 20 explosion of the BP-owned Deepwater Horizon oil rig. The oil gusher at the source of the spill, located 5,000 feet below the ocean surface and about 40 miles southeast of the Louisiana coast, is emitting an estimated minimum of 210,000 gallons of oil per day with a possible maximum of more than 10 times that amount. Dewatering Controversy in New Zealand

A New Zealand-based wastewater plant has become the target of considerable resident anger now that an oxidation pond installed in 2006 for temporary silt dewatering seems to have become more permanent. The South Taranaki District Council (STDC) allowed the installation on a temporary basis but both the council and the wastewater plant seem content to continue the use of geotextiles for dewatering at the site and may now even burry the material on site. Residents are angry that the plan has changed from what they originally approved. Learn more here.;

Fundamental Renovation of Treatment Facilities Completed at Voronezhsintezkauchuk

Dmitry Konov, President of SIBUR, and Aleksandr Gusev, Deputy Governor of the Voronezh region took part in the official opening of Voronezhsintezkauchuk waste water treatment facilities. The waste treatment facilities were switched over to full biological treatment after reconstruction of the existing facilities and construction of new ones. Investments on upgrade amounted to RUR 800 million. Read more.
