The Trojan Nuclear Power Plant cooling tower in Kalama, Oregon, came down with the aid of 2,792 pounds of dynamite. Geotextile fabric, wrapped around key blast points, contained the spread of concrete debris. It was one the demolition firm's largest and most advanced projects. The Fabricated Geomembrane Institute (FGI) held its first short course ("Constructing with Fabricated Geomembranes") on 23 October in Denver, Colorado. A Carlsbad, New Mexico landfill has received a $1.3 million fine from the New Mexico Environment Department for accepting improper waste. The facility, which attempted to ban NMED staff from inspection, has accepted (and failed to properly cover) asbestos and hazardous waste, in violation of its permit. Learn more here.;

The Fabricated Geomembrane Institute's (FGI) next "Constructing with Fabricated Geomembranes & Emerging Trends" short course will be held 11 March 2011 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Up to 7 PDHs are available, and government employees may attend the event for free. The full-day short course includes presentations from industry professionals on design, specification, testing, manufacturing, fabrication, installation, inspection, and field testing of different types of fabricated geomembranes for a variety of applications. Pipeline operators are renewing and repairing existing pipes and laying new pipelines to secure energy and water supplies across the world. There are also new applications upcoming including carbon dioxide sequestering.
