New Envision™ Sustainable Infrastructure Rating System Announced

The Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI) in collaboration with the Zofnass Program for Sustainable Infrastructure at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design (GSD) unveiled today a new infrastructure rating system, called Envision™. The system is designed to help policy makers evaluate the sustainability of infrastructure, set realistic national priorities, and conduct a national discourse on infrastructure investment. Through a holistic approach, the Envision™ system rates all types and sizes of civil infrastructure projects, and does so in terms of environmental, economic and community benefits.

Countrywide Update: Cap Ordered

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has ordered a dual clay and geosynthetic cap be installed on the beleaguered Stark County, Ohio landfill. Esakin Named Executive Director of CIELAP

The Canadian Institute of Environmental Law and Policy (CIELAP) Board of Directors has introduced Thomas Esakin as CIELAP's new Executive Director. Most recently Tom worked as a Profesor Asignatura at the Universidad del Caribe, the public university in Cancun, México, where he was cross-appointed to the university's Sustainable Tourism Department and English Departments. During his career Tom has also been the Executive Director and Director of Development for JUMP Math; Inaugural Executive Director for the Clayoquot Biosphere Trust - the administrative arm for the Clayoquot Sound UNESCO Biosphere Reserve; and a senior aide and policy advisor on Parliament Hill.

Rapid Response to Bridge Flood Damage

Following the 21 November flood destruction of the town's bridges over the River Derwent in Workington, Cumbria, Army Royal Engineers have used Tensar International's TriAx™ geogrid to help construct new bridge abutments for a 40 ton temporary footbridge. Connecting the north and south of the town, the actual bridge will take a week to assemble, and is expected to be in place for the Monday morning school run. Los Angeles Turns to Covered Reservoir

In August, the Los Angeles Department of Water & Power will move into the construction phase on upgrades to the Santa Ynez Reservoir. The reservoir is for domestic and fire-fighting water in the Pacific Palisades area. During the three-month project, one of the many transformations occurring will involve the installation of a Hypalon-based floating cover over the 9.4-acre facility. The cover will be striped green and black to better blend into the area's hillside vegetation. Learn more here.;
