Penton Media's 2010 Global Waste Management Symposium (GWMS) announced today the results of its most recent symposium. An international forum for the presentation of peer-reviewed applied and fundamental research and case studies on waste management, held October 3-6 at the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort and Spa, GWMS was deemed a success despite the current economic environment.

The International Erosion Control Association's membership voted to re-elect Julie Etra, MS, CPESC and Tom Williams, MA, CPESC to the 2011 Board of Directors. Joining Etra and Williams to the 2011 Board of Directors is new board member Beth Chesson, CPESC, CPSWQ. Chesson will begin her term in February alongside fellow Board members Julie Etra, MS, CPESC, Philip Handley, REM, CPESC, CESSWI, Lee Johnson, CPESC, Sandy Mathews, Rick Morse, CPESC, Brock Peters, CISEC and Tom Williams, MA, CPESC.

Under the patronage of Municipality of Abu Dhabi City, the 3rd International Conference "Geosynthetics Middle East 2010" is taking place in the capital city Abu Dhabi on 9th and 10th of November 2010. Organized by the leading Plastic Institute SKZ Germany in cooperation with its local partner BMC Gulf, the conference is expected to become the biggest event on Geosynthetics in the Middle East and is attracting industry experts worldwide.

Southern California Edison is dropping the level of Shaver Lake to 73 feet below the dam's spill level, in order to expedite its two-year dam maintenance project. The utility is resurfacing the 83-year-old concrete dam with a geomembrane liner designed to prolong the dam's life and prevent leakage. Learn more here.;

Mining Engineering News has published a review of topics and speakers who took part recently in the International Erosion Control Association's (IECA) South Africa Chapter conference. For example, the Western Cape Department of Agriculture’s (DoA) Hans King spoke about the "knock-on" effect of erosion--how both erosion and solutions in one place can accelerate it elsewhere. During the second six months of 2009 the water procurement company WGE (Wassergewinnung Essen GmbH) was able to implement its double pipeline to transport purified drinking water and untreated water from the drinking water purification plant in the area where it crosses the river Ruhr between the districts of Essen-Horst and Überruhr which is part of Essen's drinking water network system. The innovation with this particular crossing is the concrete casing which was made by using the industrial woven synthetic material "Incomat® Standard 20.120" manufactured by HUESKER Synthetic. Geosynthetics specialists from Gescher developed a tailor-made "jacket" which surrounds the pipes and is produced as a double layer of geotextile filled with concrete to form a 21.5 cm thick concrete shell to protect the pipes. The "Incomat® System" is an economical and time-saving alternative when compared with other types of construction used in Germany until now.

In New Zealand, the Greater Wellington Water Supply Department has embarked on an ambitious plan to bolster the Stuart Macaskill water storage lakes capacity. The two to three-year project will add at least 13% of supply to the lakes, simply to preventing seepage loss. The old clay-only liners in the lakes will be scraped back and replaced with geosynthetic containment technologies. Learn more here.;

ASTM International Committee D35 on Geosynthetics has published D7613, "Standard Specification for Flexible Polypropylene Reinforced (fPP-R) and Nonreinforced (fPP) Geomembranes." This is a new standard and may impact hydraulic application material selection, such as pond liners. Tests and property limits used to characterize the sheet are values intended to ensure minimum quality. In-place system design criteria, such as field-seaming strength and material compatibility among others, are factors that should be considered but are beyond the scope of the specification. . Snow may come any time to the Siskiyou Mountains. Crews working on the remediation of Blue Ledge Mine are hurrying to install high-density polyethylene (HDPE) liner and other controls before the winter weather weather arrives. The former copper mine is being remediated by a $13.6 million plan to prevent polluted runoff from leaching into the area’s watershed. Learn more here.;

Pacific Gold Corp. (PCFG 0.02, 0.00, -15.95%) announced today that the Black Rock Canyon Mine has begun the testing of geotextile tubes for dewatering tailings from the mine screening plant. The Company is pleased to report today that the tubes are in place and the testing has begun. The plant is operating, and material is now being processed. Further information will be provided once the testing and results are completed over the next two weeks.

Advanced Drainage Systems, Inc. (ADS) has added an innovative new product to its Arc line of plastic leaching chambers to meet the needs of septic leach field installers. The new Arc 36LP is specially designed for challenging installations such as high groundwater conditions or other site restrictions. Installing systems requiring shallow burial depths has several advantages, including greater separation from the groundwater, enhanced aerobic bacterial action and improved percolation rates. The new Arc 36LP chamber leverages more than 40 years of experience designing state-of-the-art engineered structures.

The Industrial Fabrics Association International's (IFAI) Expo Asia 2011 will include two technical sessions on geosynthetics. The event will be held 22-25 March 2011 at the new Marina Bay Sands Hotel and Exhibition Centre in Singapore. The International Erosion Control Association (IECA) has announced its University Partners initiative. This initiative creates an informal relationship between IECA and universities and colleges that offer courses in the fields of erosion control, sediment control and stormwater management. The overall objective of this program is to introduce students to IECA and provide a means for them to interact in an educational environment with the industry professionals who make up IECA's membership.

IECA's Career Center has joined the Environmental and Engineering Vertical Networks aimed to increase exposure of job placement ads purchased by IECA members and to grow the pool of jobs available for IECA members to explore. Job Target, who manages IECA's Career Center, offers 85 Vertical Networks covering a wide-array of industries and specialties. The US Army Corps of Engineers recently completed the installation of sand-filled geotextile tubes along the 1.5-mile beachfront in Pascagoula, Mississippi. Now, additional sand will be pumped in and grass installed to conclude the erosion control and beach stabilization work. Learn more here.;
