From 1963 - 1977, Maxey Flats in Kentucky accepted nuclear waste for disposal. Since 1977, the site has been an on-going cleanup and monitoring site. A geomembrane cap was installed to prevent further incursion of water after 900,000 gallons of leachate was extracted, and a final cap is planned. Today, the site is considered much safer and is welcoming visitors to observe and learn about the environmental controls. Learn more here.;

GeoTubes – Dewatering Lagoons

0
In Chesley, Ontario, Geotubes are being used to dewatering sewage lagoons. It is the first cleaning of the lagoons in 25 years and the first municipal use of geosynthetic dewatering tubes in the Grey-Bruce region. This simple process uses permeable geotextile bags that retain solids while usable lagoon water leaks back into the facility. The Geotube brand is manufactured by TenCate. The Chesley project uses 100-ft-long, 30-ft-circumference tubes capable of holding 38,000 litres. Dewatering is being conducted by Eganville-based Bishop Water Technologies Inc. Other nearby communities are considering the same lagoon cleanup plan. Learn more here.;

Proof of leachate collection layer performance is key to the work item. Learn more here.;

Scientists Looking for Cure to Alzheimer's Invent Self-Cleaning Solar Panels

0
A group of researchers under prof. Ehud Gazit at the Tel Aviv University were looking for a cure for Alzheimer's Disease when they discovered a new way to get peptides to self-assemble at high-temperatures in a vacuum. The resulting structure, a "peptide forest," has some interesting physical properties that could make it useful for solar energy. This "peptide forest" is useful in that it repels both water and dust. If solar panels were coated with it, they would be self-cleaning and could produce more clean energy. Learn more here.;
