Coordination Crucial for Massive Retaining Wall at Hendersonville, Tennessee Sam's Club
When plans were being made for a new Sam's Club in Hendersonville, TN, developers were presented with several challenges regarding the retaining wall on the property. First, the wall would reinforce a large area, rising 30 feet high and running nearly a half-mile. Areas behind the wall had a steep three to one slope, access roads for deliveries had to be accommodated, and because it backed up to popular walking/bike path and green area, it had to include safety railings. Plus, the upscale area warranted an attractive wall system and design. Read about the solution from Strata Systems.
SuperTek Software Aims to Cut Expenses, Costly Errors
On geosynthetic installation sites, such as during a landfill cell's construction, the current practice of construction quality assurance (CQA) involves field technicians filling out paper forms on site, having the forms cross-checked at a later time and then double-checked again prior to certification. "This linear process often leads to problems being detected days (or weeks) after installers have left the job site," say the principals of CQA Solutions, an Ohio-based firm. The company has released a real-time software solution: SuperTek. The software has been designed to dramatically reduce total technician time and the incidence of error.

Environmental Research and Education Foundation Webinar to Focus on Coal Ash Management and Regulations
The Environmental Research and Education Foundation (EREF) will present a Webinar entitled "Coal Ash Management and Regulations" on Tuesday, 19 February 2013 from 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm (EST). Coal accounts for more than a third of electricity generation in the U.S., resulting in over 130 million short tons of coal combustion residuals (CCR) annually. This makes coal ash one of the largest waste streams in the U.S. This webinar provides a primer on CCRs as well as recommendations for their management and characterization in light of these changes. Speakers: John Daniels and Christopher Hardin. Learn more and register.
CASE STUDY: Lining Biomass and Composting Operations
New Earth is a family-owned business based in Texas that has been operated for almost 15 years. Its Houston compost facility accepts dated fruits and vegetables from big box supermarkets and wood waste from tree and shrub trimming operations. The materials are then mulched into composts of varying coarseness. When the company added biomass to its product mix, it needed a geomembrane base liner in compliance with Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) rules. Read the story here (PDF)

Designing Reinforced Earthwalls to Eurocode 7, Part 2
In this two-part article, Alain Hérault, Sabihi Abdelhak, and Chakib El Iraki write on the new French standard NF P 94-270 and how it establishes design rules for the use of geosynthetics and other reinforcing materials in reinforced earth walls and steep slope applications. These rules, based on the partial factors defined in Eurocode 7 (EN 1997), were applied to a huge Mediterranean bypass project in Morocco to determine tensile strengths, lengths and spacing of geogrids. HERE IN PART 2, the authors address design, installation procedures, and quality management.
