GSE Environmental Announces First of Its Kind Coal Ash Barrier System

0
GSE Environmental, a leading global manufacturer and provider of geosynthetic lining products and services, has announced the launch of its Coal Ash Barrier System, which addresses increasing concerns about coal ash containment and the possibility of groundwater contamination. The system was unveiled during GSE's coal ash technical seminar held in Virginia. With power facilities and utility companies realizing the consequences of having insufficient coal ash containment and with new EPA regulations pending, GSE took proactive measures to provide the energy industry with a first of its kind containment system that combines three of the company's proven geosynthetic products that meet or exceed regulatory standards to maximize groundwater protection and minimize both risks and costs.

D18 Revised Gabions Standard

0
ASTM Committee D18 on Soil and Rock has revised standard D7014, "Standard Practice for Assembly and Placement of Double-Twisted Wire Mesh Gabions and Revet Mattresses," as D7014-10. Gabions and revetment mattresses are used to achieve soil stability and prevent soil erosion and are also used as retaining wall structures to resist movements due to gravity. Learn more here.;

Geotextile to Improving Concrete Overlay Construction

0
Four ongoing construction projects in Iowa were selected to study ways to improve concrete overlay construction. Seven research objectives for improving concrete overlay construction were investigated across the four projects, including the installation of geotextiles for bond breakers. The study so far recommends using a geotextile bond breaker for unbonded concrete overlays; and when using them, reduce the potential for wind/traffic damage by installing the geotextile less than one day before paving. The April 2010 Tech Transfer Summary publication from the Iowa State University Institute for Transportation summarizes the project. Learn more here.;

New Geogrid/Geofoam Earthquake-Mitigation Material

0
Research being conducted at Queen's Royal Military College in Canada has produced a new earthquake mitigation geosynthetic that appears to be a combination of geofoam and geogrids. It has been developed by Dr. Richard Bathurst and graduate student Saman Zarnani and is intended to stabilze structures against earthquakes. Shake table tests have been very positive. New Hearing, New Notice On Dam

0
The installation of a geomembrane-lined embankment for a coal slurry impoundment facility has precipitated a new round of public comments on the facility's approval. The Deer Run Mine in Hillsboro, Illinois had been approved for belowground storage but sought to construct an 80-ft-high dam aboveground. The first public notice indicated no construction would go forth without public comments; but a second notice removed the impediment to active construction and work on the site has been seen. New public comments on the potential aboveground dam are now being taken. Learn more here.;
