The six major energy-using countries of East Asia could stabilize their greenhouse gas emissions by 2025 without compromising growth, a new World Bank report has found. The report, "Winds of Change: East Asia's Sustainable Energy Future," says major investments in energy efficiency and a concerted switch to renewable sources of power in China, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam could simultaneously stabilize greenhouse gas emissions, increase energy security while improving local environments.

ASTM Committee D35 on Geosynthetics has revised D5890, "Standard Test Method for Swell Index of Clay Mineral Component of Geosynthetic Clay Liners." This test method covers an index method that enables the evaluation of swelling properties of a clay mineral in reagent water for estimation of its usefulness for permeability or hydraulic conductivity reduction in geosynthetic clay liners (GCL). ASTM Committee D18 on Soil and Rock, WK29134, is a work item for "New Terminology for Hydraulically-applied Erosion Control Product (HECP)." The scope is to provide a definition for an hydraulically-applied erosion control product (HECP). A material definition is important to the consumer so that they purchase a product that will meet their intended need. The definition would be built into material specifications for hydraulically-applied fiber products. DOTs, landscape architects and civil engineers would utilize the definition in drafting material specifications. Learn more here.;

Microbe That Could Boost Landfill Gas Production Identified

Researchers from North Carolina State University claim to have identified the microbe that responsible for the build up of large quantities of methane in landfill sites. It is hoped that these findings can be used to accelerate methane production for power generation. "The research community can use our findings to explore ways of accelerating the methane-generation process," said one of the researchers, "creating methane more quickly for power generation, and making additional room in the landfill for waste disposal."
