The system will be used in the AGT Flood Early Warning System.

WEBINAR: Design within the Coastal Environment

0
This instructional webinar will provide attendees with knowledge on the use of geotextile containers and polymeric marine mattresses for island breakwater creation. On-site project experience from the City of Ft. Pierce Marina in Florida will be shared. This project features a permanent wave barrier, configured as a carefully sculpted, but naturally appearing, artificial island breakwater. This solution was proposed to protect the marina from a 100-year storm event, as mandated by FEMA regulations. Learn more here.;

Hecla to Pay for Mine Tailings Spill

0
The Associated Press reports that Idaho-based Hecla Mining Co. pay $102,000 in penalties following a spill of mine tailings at a zinc and lead facility near Mullan, Idaho. More than 22,000 gallons of hazardous material was released. Of greatest concern in the incident is the roughly 900 gallons of liquid mill tailings that spilled into the South Fork Coeur d'Alene River during a heavy storm in 2006. That accident occurred at the ironically named Lucky Friday Mine. The company has taken numerous steps to correct these matters and prevent them from being repeated. Learn more here.;

Also, extensive analysis by the Blackburn-United Kingdom facility's chief engineer has found that boiler efficiency has improved by 5.46%. Read more in the release.

An Artificial Island Ringed with Geosynthetics

It’s long been said that investing in land is smart because “they aren’t making more of it.” In general, this is true. Mitigation strategies create more habitat, but not...

WM Update on Hawaii Landfill

0
Waste Management of Hawaii has completed the first of three phases repairs at the Waimanalo Gulch Sanitary Landfill, but the landfill remains only partially open. The company reported that it has repaired the eastern side of cell E6, which was damaged by a January 13 storm. Also damaged in that storm was a point at which the liner edge meets the gulch wall. Falling rock was to blame. Learn more here.;

Do Artificial Surf Reefs Work?

0
A blogger has taken on analysis of the track record for the artificial surf reefs constructed over the last 12 years. Grades are poor, with C- being the best. One of those recipients is Narrowneck Reef in Australia. The system in Narrowneck is large and uses geotextile bags. While the reef serves its main purpose--controlling beach erosion--it hasn't turned out to be a surfer's dream (nor was it built to be). Pratt's Reef in the America's also uses geotextile bags, but received a grade of F. The tiny installation has not had an effect and is being dismantled. Learn more here.;

Fixing a Hole

0
Ruby Henn Road near Great Falls, Montana is a forest road. A spring hole developed in it earlier this year, making passage difficult. But before the season is too cold for road construction, crews are going to repair the route by excavating saturated soil, placing geotextiles, adding washed rock and drainage piping, and backfilling. Maccaferri Coastal Protection - Super Storm Sandy

Revisiting a Dune Core Coastal Protection Installation after Sandy

During a Nor'easter in March of 2010, heavy surf and high winds devastated the dune system protecting beach front homes, near the Hampton's, on the twin forks of Long Island, New York. With the dunes gone, there was nothing left to protect the beachfront properties from future storms. Instead of doing a "sand push" along the beach, or trucking in sand to rebuild the dunes, Maccaferri was approached to offer an alternative long term solution. The steel sheeting shown in the top right image was a temporary solution after an earlier storm; however, the US Army Corp of Engineers mandated that it was to be removed. The MacTubes® were installed as the only means of defense against future storms.

EcoPerspectives on a Nuclear France

The EcoPerspectives blog on the French nuclear industry has published a piece about La Manche Storage Center (CSM) for essentially short-lived waste of “low”- and intermediate-level radioactivity. One of the reports was on the advisability of installing a more durable cover over the waste. The next annual surveillance reports must evaluate the rate of infiltration through the geomembrane now over the waste. Read more. Learn more here.;
