Cleaning up the ash dump at the old Medfield State Hospital near Needham, Massachusetts, were tabled following protests and a need for professional engineering reviews. ADS Environmental Engineering, LLC. ADS warned against the 12-inch soil cap plan, recommending instead that a geotextile fabric be placed in between the clean soil cap and contaminated soil, to provide a temporary and long-term erosion barrier, in the event that erosion of the cap isn’t immediately noticed, and to provide a visual signal that erosion of the cap is occurring. First Call: Landfill 2009

A first announcement and call for papers has been issued for Landfill 2009, the 8th Bienniel Seminar on Waste Disposal by Landfill from the Landfill Interest Group - Western Cape. LIG is part of the Institute of Waste Management of Southern Africa (IWMSA). Landfill 2009 will be guided by the theme "The Functional Landfill." Unexpected Water Prompts Pond Liner Need

In Cleveland, Tennessee, an expensive drainage ditch and retention pond project that was built during a drought is now suffering erosion strong erosion in non-drought conditions. An unknown water source is entering the pond and turning it into a constant stream. Officials are now debating whether riprap could be used in the ditches. If the Tennessee Department of Environmental Conservation does not approve the plan, a geosynthetic liner will most likely be needed in the pond to sustain the flow rate. Learn more here.;

Seven Region 7 Superfund Sites to Receive Funds from Largest Environmental Bankruptcy Settlement

At least seven Superfund sites in EPA Region 7, including five in Missouri and one each in Kansas and Nebraska, will receive a total of $282 million, plus interest, to fund environmental cleanup and restoration work as a result of a legal settlement in the largest environmental bankruptcy case in U.S. history. The seven sites in Region 7 are among more than 80 Superfund sites in 19 states receiving portions of a $1.79 billion settlement from the reorganization of the American Smelting and Refining Company LLC (ASARCO). The funds will be used to pay for past and future costs incurred by federal and state agencies to address environmental contamination caused by ASARCO's operations around the country.

LyondellBasell to Close PP Plant in Terni, Italy

LyondellBasell Industries has announced a project to cease the production of polypropylene (PP) at Terni, Italy. The company has started the employee consultation process regarding a project to permanently shut down the unit. LyondellBasell said that PP production activities in Italy will be focused on the company’s world-scale sites at Ferrara and Brindisi. The Terni plant has a nameplate capacity of 255 KT per year. In conjunction with the shutdown project, LyondellBasell has started consultation with representatives of the employees to determine the appropriate path forward for the employees at the site. The plant currently has approximately 120 permanent employees. Learn more here.;

Anti-Climax: Bridge to Reopen

After more than five months of closure, the Esquimalt Lagoon bridge in Colwood, British Columbia--on Victoria Island--has been repaired. On the north side of the bridge, the asphalt was removed and fill material excavated out. The area was repacked and the sides reinforced with geotextile to prevent fill material from being drawn out. The Augusta Chronicle reports that erosion control inspections and permit requirements are having a noticable and positive impact. By January 2007, builders needed to obtain certification from the Georgia Soil and Water Conservation. Nine months later, inspectors are finding significant improvements in the use of silt fencing and other sediment control materials. (Registration required to read article.) Learn more here.;

Booming Business

A great deal of attention has been paid to the use of oil booms--a generally small-scale production item that has become central to large-scale containment of oil in the Gulf of Mexico. According to the US government's response website, www.RestoreTheGulf.gov, more than 3.51 million feet of oil booms have been deployed. Another 820,000+ feet are on-hand for deployment. Portland Classical Chinese Garden awards I-CORP INTERNATIONAL Contract to Locate Leaks

I-CORP INTERNATIONAL has been awarded a contract by the Portland Classical Chinese Garden in Portland, ME, to locate leaks in the GCL-only liner of its 8,000 ft2 ornamental lake. Using new technology I-CORP will perform what is believed to be only the second comprehensive leak survey on a non-geomembrane lined pond while covered with water. I-CORP is also working on pitch-scan noncontact ultrasonics for nondestructively assessing the bond strength of every millimeter of geomembrane seams
