VIDEO SERIES: Coastal Protection with Geosynthetics
Geofabrics Australasia has published Chapter 3 of its lecture series on the use and testing of coastal protection systems using geosynthetics. Here in Part 3, James Carly of the Water Research Laboratory discusses the test models and actual results which resulted in design methodology for the coastal protection system from Geofabrics. The lecture is part of the "Geosynthetics at Work" series produced by Australia's International Fibre Centre. This page also contains the videos from Chapters 2 and 1.
The View from Queensland: Coastal Protection Continues
A couple years ago, Geofabrics Australasia helped a private landowner correct beachfront erosion and provide a long-term shoreline protection strategy. The landowner sent a photograph to Geofabrics this week of the coastline at high tide. The geotextile bag design is providing exemplary support. Settlement and erosion are not appearing. The installation remains strong. "The View from..." is a continuing series of photographs from the field. Share your geosynthetics success. Email the editor, Chris Kelsey, at chris@geosynthetica.net.

Special WEFTEC Issue Of Water Environment Research Examines Potential Regrowth In Anaerobically Digested Biosolids
Several investigators have reported higher densities of indicator bacteria after dewatering of anaerobically digested biosolids, an inevitable byproduct of the wastewater treatment process. The effects of these processes on the sudden increase and regrowth of fecal coliform and E.coli are examined in the latest issue of Water Environment Research (WER), the popular journal published by the Water Environment Federation (WEF). Formerly available to subscribers only, selected WER articles are available free to the public on a monthly basis through an open-access program.

A Royal Arsenic Problem
The newly created, 160-acre Royal Palm Beach Commons Park in Florida has been constructed on a former golf course. When the tee boxes and greens were excavated, arsenic-contaminated soil had to be stockpiled. Arsenic was part of the herbicides used on the course for many years. Now, the soil is contained on an 18-foot-high mound behind a residential home. A 20-mil liner has been installed for containment. Residents want the arsenic soil moved, but the city says it would be too expensive.
