Cal Poly's Global Waste Research Institute Awarded National Science Foundation Grant to Expand Engineering...

The Global Waste Research Institute (GWRI) of Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, announced today that it had been awarded a $372,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to acquire an Optical Interferometry System to help research and analyze material surface characteristics for a variety of civil engineering, bio-medical, manufacturing, micro-electromechanical, and aerospace engineering applications. Example applications in waste and byproduct management areas will include quantification of surface characteristics of textured geomembranes used in containment systems and characterization of inclusions made of recycled materials such as tire chips, fly ash, glass, and plastics.

The Smith International Foundation

Two years ago, when Mark Smith sold his renowned engineering firm Vector Engineering to Australia-based Ausenco, he did not want to put the proceeds, as he says, "solely in his back pocket." He founded the Smith International Foundation, a not-for-profit group with a mission dedicated to fostering dialogue between resource industries, such as mining companies, and the communities they impact. It's a natural extension of the work Smith encouraged and was a part of at Vector. Read more about this foundation and ways the geosynthetics industry might interact with it, resource industries, and communities around the world.

Foundation Stability Enhanced with Tensartech Geocell Mattress System

0
Newly published literature shows how the Tensartech Geocell Mattress Foundation Reinforcement System creates a 1m deep stiff foundation platform over poor ground and mitigates the effects of differential settlements, reduces lateral spread of foundation soils and can also increase their bearing capacity to improve stability enabling accelerated fill placement and project completion. Read more about this innovative system in the press release.

Brewster selectmen will spend $117,000 on golf course

0
Selectmen voted to spend $117,000 to fix several sinkholes at the Captains Golf Course in Brewster, Massachusetts. Decaying tree stumps that were buried when the course was built has caused the sinkholes. The course will use a high tech wire mesh (Tensar Geogrid), buried with stone and sand to limit the sinking. Learn more here.;

Green Road System Installed Near Golf Course

0
An eco-friendly drainage system will be used when it comes time to pave the streets in the new golf course development in Hot Springs, South Dakota, set to begin next year. Although the main portion of the road will still be poured concrete, it's the edges that will make a difference. There, a geocellular grid from CellTek will be installed. Learn more here.;

Liberty National – A Remediated Golf Course

0
Tiger Woods is ready to take on remediation--via the undulating greens of Liberty National near the Statue of Liberty in New York. The course grounds, built over an old oil refining site, occupy 160 acres and offer an astonishing 4,000 feet of waterfront space and magnificent views of the Statue of Liberty, Manhattan skyline and Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. Bob Cupp and Tom Kite designed the course. Geosynthetic liners were used extensively to cap the old polluted soil and separate it from the clean, rolling hills of the very challenging links-style course that now characterizes the area. Learn more here.;

Tom Kite on Golf Courses on Remediated Land

0
The Barclay's transcript archive, over at the PGA Tour website, includes an interview with veteran golfer Tom Kite and Bob Cupp on designing a golf course over a former industrial site. Kite addresses how the course is different from today's minimalist designs, in that converting a formerly polluted site to a beneficial reuse site requires intensive alteration of the land, including genuine containment measures (ie, geosynthetic caps). Learn more here.;

Golf Course Upgrades

0
Geosynthetics have been used increasingly in recreational uses, such as for containment in golf course ponds and even down to drainage and lining beneath sand traps. In Greenwich, Connecticut the sand traps are being replaced and geosynthetics added ahead of the 2008 golf season. The 30-year-old traps are finally receiving a much-needed drainage upgrade.
