A Growing Movement and an Unprecedented Response
Freecycling is the act of recycling what is destined for a landfill by giving it away to those who can still utilize the original materials. For the manufacture of geosynthetics, this may represent a huge opportunity to reduce the amount of material that is landfilled simply by default of being "waste" from the perspective of the conventional manufacturing, shipping, and storage side of the business. Geofabrics Australasia recently engaged in a highly successful freecycling trial in the Albury/Wodonga area of New South Wales, thanks to a strong freecycling organization and the dedicated efforts of a Geofabrics employee.
Safe Slopes for Settlement Ponds
Consol's Bailey Mine located near Graysville, Pennsylvania in the southwest corner of the state pumps coal laden sediment water from its deep mines to settlement ponds which are typically underlain with clay. The settlement ponds have steep sideslopes ranging from 2H:1V to 2H:1V and CETCO lined 30 acres of side slopes around the perimeter of a pond in the Summer of 2009. Read more.

EPA concerned about Monsanto pollution control dam
Federal regulators are concerned that a dam built by Monsanto Co. earlier this year to trap phosphate mine runoff may be stopping more than just pollution. They say the dam has also halted millions of gallons of water in Sheep Creek that would otherwise help fill the Blackfoot River. The Environmental Protection Agency now wants the maker of Roundup herbicide to begin a costly treatment to remove selenium and heavy metals, then discharge clean water downstream, instead of capturing it in a 50-million-gallon lake behind the dam and using it for dust control on its mining roads.

NAGS Mining Study, Executive Summary
In 2003, the North American Geosynthetics Society's (NAGS) Award of Merit authorized research into the Use of Geosynthetics in Mining and Mineral Processing Industry. The Final Report that resulted from this research was submitted to NAGS in 2007. Recently, new requests for this research have come in. NAGS has shared the Executive Summary from that study. The full report is available for purchase ($50, CD) through NAGS. Contact Executive Director David Suits for more information: Nagsdirector@aol.com.
RFP Database
The Request for Proposal Database (RFPdb) was created to facilitate the submission and sharing of competitive bidding business opportunities between organizations and contracting firms/independent contractors. The RFP pool is extremely broad, including construction, tourism, public relations, web design, and much more. The goal of the RFPdb is to provide a public site for organizations to post their Requests for Proposals (RFP) to a centralized location. Registration is free but required.
