GSI's Second Inspector Certification Program

0
At a Geosynthetic Institute (GSI) Workshop held on 1 April 2010, representatives from about 20 member organizations suggested the need for a program to help reduce the number of mechnically stabilized earth (MSE) wall, berm and slope failures. Our current database in this regard is well over 100 such failures. While inadequate design and construction were the root causes of these failures (both excessive deformation and/or actual collapse), both could have been avoided, or at least mitigated, by proper construction inspection. This two-way orientation by field inspectors (notification of design anomalies and correction of contractors errors) should help stem the failures of these structures going forward. Read more.

Fabricated Geomembrane Institute (FGI) Is One of the Fastest Growing Associations in the Geosynthetics...

0
The Fabricated Geomembrane Institute (FGI) was created two years ago to represent the wide variety of specialty geomembranes that are provided by fabricators. "The association started strong with 23 original members in March 2009," stated Dr. Tim Stark, "and that membership has more than doubled to 48 companies in all membership categories. This growth is due in part to the research being conducted by the FGI as well as the educational courses FGI regularly offers to the industry." The association has accomplished much since its inception and more projects are in the works, such as exposed solar covers and air channel testing of field seams. Anyone involved in the fabricated geomembrane industry, whether manufacturer, fabricator, designer or others allied with the industry, is invited to join.

Chief Oil and Gas Statement on DEP Fine

0
The Pennsylvania DEP announced yesterday that Chief Oil and Gas has paid a $180,000 fine for a spill at a site in Somerset County more than a year ago in March 2010. Chief had a small spill of hydraulic oil at this site last summer. Hydraulic oil is used to operate machinery onsite. The spill did not leave the perimeter of the pad site and all soil samples showed no environmental impact whatsoever. While no harm was done to the environment, Chief takes all incidents seriously. In late 2010, we made many changes to our best management practices. One improvement included lining all site operations with a protective plastic liner so that small spills like this don't come into contact with the environment at all.

Benefits and cost advantages of fabricated geomembranes

0
This paper looks at the use of fabricated geomembranes and the numerous cost advantages of these materials. The reduction of installation time and testing is particularly important in harsh environments and fabricated geomembranes can be used to extend the “field installation season.” Further the reduced installation cost is derived from the use of large factory fabricated panels that reduces the amount of field seaming and field personnel time that is required. Additional savings can be found in the reduction of third party Construction Quality Control costs. The paper describes how Construction Quality Control standards are maintained by conducting CQC prior to the geomembrane being shipped to the jobsite. Learn more here.;
