Advances in Leak Detection

France-based Cemagref's Hydraulic Structures team has been using a new experimental platform since 2006 to test leak-detection systems in levees. The platform, financed by the Carnot fund, acts as a stimulus for a number of partnership research projects on structure monitoring. The platform was originally used for the Hydrodetect partnership-research project. TenCate helped coordinate the work, which has been assessing the capacity of a geotextile fabric equipped with fiber optic detection technology. Paul Royet of Cemagref writes on the latest experimental installations and how this new technology may be the future of hydraulic structure leak detection systems. Read the article here.

Geogrid Requested to Fix Construction Timeline

0
In Carl Junction, Missouri, contractor Larry Snyder and Co. encountered an uncharacteristic and protracted spell of bad weather in what had been a fairly direct construction project. After 56 days of construction were disrupted by snow, rain or excessive mud, the city council extending the contract timeline (to avoid fines being assessed to the company). The company has now requested money for geogrids to conduct some parking lot construction. Geogrids, the company believes, are the only approach it can use in these less than ideal weather conditions and to get the project done more quickly without sacrificing quality and safety. Experts recommend lining for reservoir

0
Engineers investigating the raw water reservoir in Fremont, Ohio have discovered some karst. Among other effects, karst can cause seepage, piping, and instability. The engineers' report from Arcadis recommend a composite liner system (HDPE or LLDPE geomembrane and GCL) across the entire slope, protected by geotextile and cover soil, and geogrid reinforcement. The city has roughly one year to complete the reservoir project and must now seek approval to alter the design and include a lining system. Learn more here.;
